1. I don't know...I think it's Scalia.
Rehnquist will resign, Scalia will be nominated Chief Justice, and Ashcroft will be nominated for the vacancy.

2. Scalia is to Thomas
as Cheney is to Bush. It'll be Scalia.

10. Why would that be a slick political move. Because he's African-American?
The Bushes don't give a shit about that, nor do they have to. They've got "a mandate!" They've got "political capital to spend."

They don't have to care about minorities of any kind any more -- or really anyone who isn't a rich, white, massive campaign contributor. They're already re-elected. They can do whatever they damned well please.

Scalia is Cheney's hunting bud. Chief Justice Scalia.

12. His being black has nothing to do with it.
Thomas is more conservative than Scalia.

17. no, but they'll say Dems are racist for opposing him
Just like implied we were racist for opposing a looney-tune like Miguel Estrada.

7. He may get the title
but he'll never fill the role.

No matter how many Senate confirmation votes he gets, no matter how many gold stripes on the sleeve of his robe, no matter how many law clerks groomed by the Heritate Society kiss his ring on a daily basis, he will forever and ever defer to Scalia-- or whoever is the alpha wingnut in the room.

Even Colin Powell has more dignity than this congenital toady.

9. No reason to choose Thomas. It's Chief Scalia. No question.
And Ashcroft for the vacancy.

We're fucked.

11. Nope. No way.
It's gonna be Scalia. He's been there longer. No one likes Clarence Thomas anyway.

13. Not Thomas.
He's completely ambivalent to the whole institution. He doesn't even ask questions during oral argument. No way he'll be chief. Besides, Bush I only appointed him so he could say he had appointed the first black justice.

16. What can you do about it? Nothing
We knew this election was important. And we didn't get the votes. Say see ya to things like abortion and affirmative action. There shouldn't of been a young person or minority that didn't vote this time. And they sat on their ass. Now we have to pay for it.

20. Chief Justice Scalia. Get used to it.
Bush has said many times that Scalia is his ideal S.C. justice.

I expect he'll revive the nomination of his Hispanic nominee, Estrada, but bump it up to a nomination for S.C.
