Enough with the lectures on "morality issues." To me, these posts are like ragging on the janitor at Enron for neglecting to throw out the right trash. Republicans chose the moral issues and all the bullies got behind their pulpits and spit at their congregations to "do something about immorality."
The problem is, they are scripturally screwed. There isn't any "Jesus of Texas" swaggering around with his M-16. There isn't any "Jesus of TV Land" having tea and Old Testament with Pat Robertson or any of the fat, white rich men who call themselves Christians. There isn't any "Jesus of the Pentagon" wearing BDUs and talking Shock and Awe strategy. There isn't any "Jesus of the Bull Market" scrutinizing stock returns and cutting programs for small children so the rich can have tax breaks and gloating with blood-soaked hands over the spoils of war.
If the Repukes are correct, and Jesus is Lord, there is only one Jesus they can be discussing. He's the one who said, "I am the way and the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father except through me." If what Jesus said is true, they can't quote Paul or Moses or Peter to justify their actions. They have to go straight to the source and ask themselves, "What did Jesus say about this?"
Folks, Jesus had NOTHING to say about abortion.
Jesus had NOTHING to say about homosexuality.
What DID Jesus talk about most? Loving your enemies; helping the poor; helping your neighbors; divorce; anger and rage; blasphemy ( falsely claiming the Holy Spirit guided you to make a choice?); murder; thievery; greed; gluttony; casting judgement on others; taking the massive beam of sin out of your own eye before you worry about the toothpick of sin poking out of the other guy's eyeball.
Clearly, Jesus is not a Republican.
So they have fashioned a new Jesus. A new Son of Man. A Military Messiah, who excuses the deaths of 100,000. A Jesus who no longer says, Blessed are the Peacemakers. A new Jesus who says, Blessed shall be the Warmongers.
A Moneyed Messiah: Who cares about the poor? Certainly not God. And not Republicans. "Blessed are the Rich." today.
A Misogynist Messiah: Who, unlike the Jesus of the Gospels, doesn't hold men to acccount for anything. All sin is woman's fault and all women must suffer and submit. (Denying the whole reason Christ died, BTW, but what's a small detail or two when you're a Republican?)
They should not wonder why they will gain no new converts. Preachers should not now wonder why the flocks will dwindle. Who could believe in such a greedy, cruel, bloodthirsty, unjust Jesus? Not me. Not most.
And they should not wonder when their world falls apart and the wolves take off the sheepskin. If their bible is correct, they were warned. And if their bible is just bunk, their well-crafted Jesus won't be any help.
So, mighty Republican, cast your lots for the bloody spoils of war. Turn your head and refuse to see "because you have eyes, but see not; you have ears but hear not." And we will see if your new fashioned Jesus will save you.
