The Battle for our Democracy Continues The presidential election is undecided at this point, but I thought I'd send out this message. Now as the real battle begins, I'm reminded of the presidential election of 1972. In 1972, Richard Nixon was re-elected by a landslide. In 1974, Richard Nixon resigned the White House in disgrace. Whether Kerry wins the White House or not, our work is not done. There is a corruption that is spreading in our country and whether the majority of people understand or accept that fact, it is our job and duty to continue to fight for the truth and for our democracy. I was alive in 1972. I went to a rally at Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island, in the fall of 1972 and cheered for Nixon at a very brief election stop. "Four more years! Four more years!" I think I was one of the loudest to chant this. In 1974 I watched as Nixon resigned as president. It's amazing how much you can learn within two years. So, what happened between 1972 and 1974? How did the majority of the people switch from supporting Nixon so whole-heartedly to letting its disapproval of Nixon be so soundly known that the President would resign on his own accord? In 1972 there were people who did not give up when Nixon was re-elected. There were people who held on to the truth and continued to fight for the truth. Thanks to them, the truth of the corruption that came to be known as Watergate came to the light. Thanks to them, the people responsible for the corruption that could've destroyed our democracy were held to account for their actions. No matter what happens with this election, the battle is not over. The real fight has just begun. Linda aka Elsie da Burr
