I came to this forum in May of 2001, almost five months to the day since the Supreme Court debacle had delivered the White House to George W. Bush. I found here a forum of the like-minded, the strong, the unsatisfied, the ones who were not soothed by the mainstream media cooing "This is an orderly transition of power...this is an orderly transition of power..." but instead took to the battlements with a single word - No - upon their lips.

And we slogged through the soulless tax cuts, and the brainless appointments, and the dimwitted gibberish, and the polite Democrats who chose not to defy 'The President' even though we knew, we knew, we knew that he had no mandate by any definition and was no President of ours, and we cast an eye to the midterms where things might be made right. We worked, and we waited...and...

...and the shock was subsonic
and the smoke was deafening
between the setup and the punch line

One of the principles that we operate on in this country is that leaders are held accountable. The simple truth is that we went into Iraq on the basis of some intuition, some fear, and some exaggerated rhetoric and some very, very scanty evidence.

And to Bob...

This commission should vigorously pursue the links between foreign governments and the 9-11 hijackers. I am troubled by the lack of attention that the current administration has given to this critical aspect of the 9-11 investigation. Ignoring facts simply because they make some people uncomfortable will prevent Americans from learning the full truth about 9-11 and thereby deterring future terrorist attacks.

And to John...

I'd say if you live in the United States of America and you vote for George Bush, you've lost your mind.

And to Joe...

The way we're really going to grow the economy is to invest in people, to invest in innovation, to have the federal government put money in the kind of research that will create the new high-technology, biotechnology industries that will create the millions of new jobs.

And to Al...

When you have nonbid contractors rebuilding Iraq, if any Democrat holding office in this country had given away those nonbid contracts, they would be in front of a grand jury, probably in court as a defendant.

And to Carol...

I think if we are actually going to accept our generation's responsibility, that's going to mean that we give our children no less retirement security than we inherited from our parents.

And to Dick...

This President is a miserable failure.

And to everyone who stood with them and by them, who lived and died with them, who worked for them and through them, who have since come together behind John Kerry to throw this administration down to its doom.

I remember those days. I remember when I first found this site and lurked, so grateful to have found friends who felt as angry and devastated as I did. I read your essays, before you were "WILLIAM RIVERS PITT," but just "Will Pitt," a teacher with a gift of eloquence who had a way with words.

And now, yes, the appointed time is near. We've gone from being down-trodden and angry to motivated and active. We've built a true coalition of people who love this country and want it restored to its former glory. We've fought through tough primary battles, but now we are unified in a mission to leave no voter behind. This is something I don't think I'll ever see again in my lifetime.

Thanks to everyone here on DU. Thank you for the information the corporate media tried to supress. Thank you for your uplifting words in the sea of madness these past 3+ years have been. Thank you for the motivation to get up off my ass and DO SOMETHING.

November 2nd, I'll be doing something more important than "working." I'll be making sure that everyone's vote counts as an election judge. And at the end of what I'm sure will be a long day at the polls, I'll watch the returns come in and know that each one of us made a difference.

In one of his stage-crafted, loyalty oath required, party faithful only - all others will face arrest - campaign rally. The current president made what I find to be one of his few credible statements, "This campaign comes down to a matter of who do you trust". Exactly - who do you trust!

Do you trust the guy that has had all of his life accomplishments (few as they are) greased by his family's influence?

Do you trust the guy who spent the majority of his first 8 months in office - on vacation, ignoring the warnings all around that Bin Laden and al Qaeda were planning a "major attack" in the US?

Do you trust the guy who - once this attack did in fact take place - sat for 7 minutes looking shocked, confused, and scared -rather than acting with immediate urgency to lead the nation through the crisis?
(Your opinion of Michael Moore notwithstanding - the video speaks for itself.)

Do you trust the guy, that once his paralysis was over, who rather than returning to the seat of government and standing before the nation as our leader - chose to cower in the security of Air Force 1, while his second directed the response from an un-disclosed location?

Do you trust the guy who co-opted the support of the citizenry and the world to seek appropriate retribution for the 9/11 attacks, abandoned the legitimate efforts in Afghanistan, corrupted his so-called "war on terror", diverting both money and military to the illegitimate invasion of Iraq?

Do you trust the guy who pursued this war of convenience through the pandering of misinformation, distortion of facts and outright lies? NO WMD's - NO LINKS TO 9/11!

Do you trust the guy who has the blood of over 1,100 dead and thousands more wounded sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, nieces, nephews who have sacrificed themselves in the pursuit of the un-necessary and counter-productive occupation of Iraq. And while American soldiers make their sacrifice makes jokes over the failure of proof of his major rationale for his invasion?

Do you trust the guy who has pursued his occupation without consideration of the ramifications post war?

Do you trust a guy who has such little grasp nor concern of the implications of the policies he has promulgated both here and abroad and through such has placed the credibility of America in a jeopardy never before seen?

Do you trust the guy that to this day cannot and will not admit his mistakes and who chooses to always seek first to blame others?

Do you trust the guy who is so allergic to scrutiny that he has stood before the press, to face questioning, the least of all his predecessors?

Do you trust the guy who has placed those from his power broker special interest “benefactory” in positions within the government to promulgate policies who benefit their special interest to the detriment of our fiscal, social and environmental status?

Do you trust the guy who claims to be a uniter yet through his Presidency has done nothing to unite the nation but everything to drive social and political wedges between those he perceives to be "wid him" and those he perceives to be "agin' him"?

Do you trust a guy whose whole premise for seeking re-election is based on a self-perpetuating argument of fear?

Do you trust a guy who allows his campaign, his party his supporters to un-abashedly spread misinformation, distortions, smears and lies about his opponent?

Do you trust the guy who allows his campaign, his party and his supporters to seek out ways and to employ methods, which are designed to steal away the most fundamental right we have as American citizens - to vote and choose our representatives?

This election is not merely a choice between candidates but is a referendum on George Bush's 4 years as President. The fundamental questions are:

Has George Bush kept the promises of he made when he sought election in 2000?
NO!

Are we as a nation better off today than we were 4 years ago?
NO!

Will America be better served with more or the same?
NO!

Can we trust George Bush? When you clearly and rationally consider his record there is but one answer to this question and it is NO!

I didn't find DU until last January, but when I did I knew I had found a home. I just want to say thanks to all of you for keeping me sane during the past eleven months.

I keep visualizing myself late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning when John Kerry and John Edwards will be declared the winners of this election. My first thought will be of my late beloved Daddy, who if he had lived to see this disaster of the last four years, would have moved hell and high water to remove Bushco, et al. He is the main reason I've worked as hard as I could these past eleven months to make sure we get our country back.

Tomorrow we all have lots of work to do, so let's go get those Bush bastards.

this is only my 2nd post. i was listening to some cd's this weekend and a song on the last ron sexsmith cd jumped out at me (the line about "tuesday's coming" in the final chorus just gave me chills. i wish someone at the kerry campaign would play this on tuesday or at the election night rally:

I can spend a little time on the 'puter, can't I? I'm going to be working 4 hours this evening (followed by a night shift at the hospital) then sleep for 4 hours, then I'll be working 8 hours at the campaign headquarters tomorrow (followed by another night shift at the hospital). Alas, I wasn't able to get the time off around the election, but I'm not letting that stop me. Sometimes historical moments pass me by while I'm sleeping or working. Not this time.

I recruited 3 other nurses to come in on election day to volunteer. Almost every democrat I've talked to in the last month will be volunteering. It may be that this is an aberration that is only occurring up here in Seattle, but I doubt it.

One of my next door neighbors is going to the airport today. He's going to Florida to work at a poll there.

I have a 4 by 8 foot Kerry/Edwards sign on the roof of my houseboat, seen by everyone who passes by on the Burke-Gilman trail. I've gotten many, many thumbs up, not a single negative comment.

And so on, and so on.

I'm walking into these next two days with joy and anticipation. The revolution is on, folks, whether by ballot box or in the street, it is happening and I am thrilled to be a part of history in the making.

but Mr. Pitt I remember seeing you on C-SPAN addressing the Veterans for Peace group in San Fransisco just as the war was under way (I believe I have my time-line right). The old tales tell how the gates of the world stand open at this time. Journeys to the "other world", either metaphorically or otherwise, may well be transformative. It is for this reason that Samhain can be seen as a time when the past and future are available to the present, and a "twilight" period between both the years and the seasons.

It is a time to see ourselves as part of the web of past and future. We are not isolated in time.

It is a time when the Sídhe, the Gods, and the Ancestors might come visiting and should be offered proper hospitality; food, drink, a place to rest.

It is a time when those less kindly had to be held at bay or destroyed. Interesting, no?

I have been voting for over 40 years and have never been as sad or felt my personal responsibility as strongly as I do today.
