By DEBORAH BAKER, AP
SANTA FE, N.M. (Oct. 30) - Former President Bill Clinton told swing-state New Mexicans on Saturday their votes could be crucial in electing John Kerry and warned them not to be put off by concerns about security.
New Mexico, where Al Gore won by just 366 votes four years ago, has been a focus for both parties even though it has only five electoral votes. Clinton told thousands of people jammed onto the Santa Fe Plaza that "this whole election could be riding on this state."
President Bush, who will have a rally in New Mexico on Monday, got help Saturday from Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie and Commerce Secretary Don Evans. Gillespie met with volunteers in Albuquerque, while Evans went door to door on the city's
west side.
Clinton appeared with Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, and actor Martin Sheen, who plays President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet on "The West Wing."
