President Bush's standing among El Paso voters has barely changed in four years, according to a new El Paso Times/KVIA-ABC 7 Poll -- suggesting that Democrat challenger John Kerry will likely carry the county by 12 to 20 percentage points. Democrat Al Gore won El Paso by 18 points in 2000.
The new El Paso Times-KVIA poll shows Kerry with a 5-point lead among registered voters heading into Tuesday's election. A similar poll four years ago gave Gore a 7-point lead in El Paso just before the election. Undecided El Paso voters have tended to vote Democratic on Election Day.
Felipe Martinez, 74, a Central El Pasoan, said he voted for Gore in 2000 and is voting for Kerry this time.
"I'm a Democrat, but I vote for the best person or the person I think most capable of coming through," Martinez said. He said he voted for Kerry because of "the environment, the oil prices, the big corporations, medical, pharmaceutical, Iraq."
