Judges say House party committee's statements are false

The House Republican Campaign Committee has been fined $4,000 for knowingly making false statements in a campaign brochure attacking House District 52B Rep. Rebecca Otto, DFL-May Township.

A three-judge panel ruled 2-to-1 Friday that the brochure falsely attributed to Otto a controversial statement about Republicans and black voters that her husband had made.

The HRCC "knew the attribution was false, and the attribution would tend to injure and defeat her," the judges wrote in their ruling. They ordered the committee pay a fine of $4,000. The maximum fine is $5,000.

Otto, who is engaged in a heated rematch with Republican Matt Dean, a Dellwood architect, said she and her family "feel vindicated. This was not an innocent mistake."
