...Drake, given the opportunity to build on the progressive stance she took regarding the referendum, blew it. And big time. The opportunity came during the past General Assembly session when moderate Republicans joined Democrats and Gov. Mark Warner to push through a budget compromise that raised taxes to provide additional money for education and public safety. The significance of the compromise is difficult to overstate. It allowed the state to make partial amends for its repeated failure to adequately support critical services. Drake opposed the compromise. That failure suggests she would exacerbate, not correct, one of the biggest problems facing Congress: its inability to insist on a responsible connection between federal tax policy and federal spending.
Ashe...offers a more realistic assessment of the nation's deficit problem. Not that he's realistic enough, but he's closer to the mark than Drake. For example, he'd keep Bush's tax cuts for the middle class but roll them back for the top 1 percent of earners. He argues that the federal No Child Left Behind program should be repealed - or fully funded. This offers hope that, if he's elected, Ashe will do more than just talk about responsible spending.
As for other issues, Ashe, who is a lawyer, takes positions typical of someone aligning with the moderate to conservative side of his party. He grew up in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, but his lack of service in elected office means that a vote for Ashe is clearly taking a bit of a chance.
It's a chance worth taking. The Republican-controlled Congress, even with a Republican in the White House, has shown no interest in balancing the federal budget. It has shown no willingness to challenge President Bush's policies toward Iraq. Ashe will be interested and willing.
