<A University of New Orleans poll released Tuesday gave Bush 48 percent to Kerry's 40 percent among registered voters. When the UNO figures are weighted to include only "likely voters," Bush enjoys an even greater lead of 50 percent to Kerry's 38 percent. In both cases, the UNO poll showed Ralph Nader gets 2 percent, with 8 percent undecided.
Both polls suggest wide differences between black and white voters: In the SLU poll, 77 percent of whites support Bush, 67 percent of blacks support Kerry; In the UNO poll 66 percent of the white vote goes to Bush; 71 percent of the black vote backs Kerry.
Race is a factor in support for the war. In the SLU poll, almost 70 percent of whites surveyed approved, almost 16 percent of blacks disapproved.
Overall, 46 percent of the voters surveyed by UNO believe the national economy has gotten worse in the last year, with 27 percent saying it has stayed the same, 26 percent saying it is better.
