Seattle Times endorses Kerry
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 07:16 PM by undisclosedlocation
As ever, this is from the AP endorsements story:
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/N/NEWSPAPER_ENDORSEMENTS?SITE=SCCOL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

The Seattle Times, Seattle, endorsed Kerry on Oct. 24:

"We wish Kerry had more clarity. Bush has clarity, but it is the clarity of wrong ideas. Imagine Bush on TV next year, saying we had to invade another country. Could anyone trust him? That may be the best reason for supporting John Kerry."

As ever, I'll try to get a link to the actual editorial on edit.

Not ringing or poetic like the NY Times, but I'll take it.

1. Ooh, another switch from Bush in 2000 to Kerry in 04
For some reason I thought they endorsed Kerry a week or so ago.

2. Nice! I think we've now got - what?
85% of all newspapers endorsing Kerry?

4. Probably about half and half. Newspapers are notoriously gutless
because the bulk of their subscribers are in the suburbs and tend to be Republican, as do their advertisers. However, I think the number of papers that endorsed Bush last time but have switched to Kerry this time is now upwards of 20, while only 2 that endorsed Gore have gone to Bush. (There's a story about this on DU's front page.) And several that literally have never endorsed Democrats are refusing to endorse anybody, which is a pretty major FU to Dubya.

7. Thanks, but these lists are still incomplete
Noticed the omission of the Chattanooga Times Free Press and Seattle Times switch endorsements in both. Hopefully, they will get these updated soon.

9. I believe we're talking at cross purposes. You're talking about switched
endorsements; the question was about endorsements overall.

10. Do you have links to studies on effect of endorsements?
I would be interested in knowing how many votes in Presidential elections endorsements sway? I think I have read that newspaper endorsements have a far greater effect in local races (or in the case of a small state like mine, maybe state races).

11. That makes the Seattle Times
the first paper to endorse Kerry twice. It endorsed him several weeks ago. In fact, as far as I know, it was the first endorsement of the campaign. I don't have a link to the original endorsement, but here is an Editor and Publisher article from October 8
which has the Seattle Times listed in the Kerry endorsements.

12. E&P surveys papers; doesn't mean the endorsements come out
when they add the paper to the list. This isn't clear from their current webpage, and I don't feel like registering just to find a link, but here's the cached page for 10/11 that explicitly refers to their survey:
