Laura Ingraham becoming unhinged
I tuned in to monitor this right-wing talk jock's (jockette's?) radio show on fri night only to hear her rudely rant at even pro-b*sh callers: there was a panic in her voice which reveals what the right-wing political professionals must now know: things are going badly for b*sh-cheney.

8. The Republican party has more than its fair share of mental illness.
They tolarate any kind of obvious mental impairment - as a long as it is positive for their platform. The most obvious exmple of this is Zell Miller. He is about two steps away from needing to be hospitilized - and what do the The Republicans do - let him speak at their convention.

The Republicans are a party of hate and mental illness-dangerous combination.

Strom Thurmond when he wasn't able to do anything at all because he was basically a barely breathing near-corpse. Anyone who will support the Republican "leaders" is acceptable to them, no matter how bizarre or nonfunctional.

13. I'm sick to death of people on both sides dissing the mentally ill
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 09:46 AM by puddycat
One in four people in the USA are labelled with some kind of mental illness, from depression to personality disorders to bulimia to alcoholism. The DSM is a political document, meant to control people, and people who have these problems are betrayed by the very people they seek help from and from society at large. Once upon a time gays were considered to be mentally ill, and they fought a long battle to be recognized as human beings. Other people labelled by the DSM are still fighting this.

One day, I envision a USA where neither Dems nor Pubs use the mentally ill as mudballs, to sling back and forth to each other.

Stop this intolerance and hatred of people with these kinds of problems.

Rant over. For now.

20. Stop the bigotry! You want to paint 1/4 of the USA as beneath you!
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 10:26 AM by puddycat
Did you realize that alcoholics are considered mentally ill? Did you realize that gays used to be considered mentally ill? Did you realize that bulimics are also cconsidered mentally ill under the current DSM?

Do you realize that * is pushing for a mental health initiative that tests every person in the USA for mental illness? Do you want to be labelled as mentally ill one day because you hold different views from the norm? That's what this country is coming to. Do you realize that every totalitarian government (left or right) used mental illness as a reason to imprison and kill highly intelligent people?

Fighting any kind of bigotry is difficult, especially when the people who are so bigoted have pretenses of tolerance.

Back to the point of Zell Miller: He is not a creep because of possible mental illness, but he's a creep because of what he has done and how he has acted.

that he has lost what was a comfortable 20-point lead. He shows all the signs of dementia, and yet the Republicans are propping him up. If they cared about anything other than power, they would have him step aside and then field a candidate who was not suffering from evident dementia.

Strom Thurmond, in the last years of his tenure, was obviously nonfunctional. He usually didn't even know where he was or why. His aides did everything for him, under direction from the party.

25. I have to agree with you
And it isn't "dissing" the mentally ill to say so. You need a brain that is operating on all cylinders, all the time, to represent the people of this nation. It's just too important, and not something you can "work around" when people, as they sometimes do, decide to go off their meds.

Stevie Wonder will never be a great photographer. Stephen Hawking will never be Mr. Universe. Max Cleland can't run the relay in the Olympics, either...it does not make him an evil person, it just makes him 'unsuited to the task.'

But Max did a fine job in the Senate, didn't he. So we need to send Max back to Congress at the earliest opportunity.

36. I completely agree with you
I can't read a thread here without seeing someone spitting on some dispossessed group or another. if they're not screaming "b*tch", they're criticizing people for their body type instead of their politics or calling rural Americans "toothless hillbillies" or jumping all over low income workers as "trailer trash". I'm beginning to think that a lot of the people who frequent this board are not liberals, or even centrists -- they're haters, haters of the right wing. Hate, as an agenda, however apparently justifiable, has a way of spilling over and contaminating a person, so that eventually all someone can do is hate.

The commentator above, who doesn't think anyone's opinion but his own counts, appears to carefully treasure his flagrant ignorance of how it is that a personality trait becomes "mental illness". And, for that matter, his ignorance of the research that shows that, for everything other than schizophrenia, psychiatric diagnoses show no more consistency than chance. And the research that shows that the number of people diagnosed with any particular condition directly corrolates with the type of drug most recently released/heavily marketed. The reason most often given by med students for why they aren't going into psychiatry, despite a growing shortage of psychiatrists, is that the field isn't actually based on science. And I could continue.

15. It's the perscription meds
This is the crowd that thinks as long as they have a perscription, they can take anything & everything. I wouldn love to know the cocktails that some of these folks take on a daily basis. Then add that to the heart meds that someone like Cheney is on and you've got some pretty wacky people running around.

16. also, Patricia, I don't think self-described bible-thumpers should talk!
religious people, people who believe all sorts of myth as being true, are the last ones who should point fingers at anyone else and scream "mental illness"!

Yes, I think Zell Miller is a horrible person, but not because he may or may not be suffering any kind of mental illness or Altheimers.
