5. It was desperation, and the R party in Illinois is in trouble

Highest elected official is the State Treasurer. They couldn't get ANYONE to run against Obama. Yes, Hastert, Hyde, & others are big names in the House, but there is really no one dominant R in Illinois right now. For lack of a better term, a "face of the party."
