Get-Out-the-Vote Flier Riles Missouri Republicans
ST. LOUIS (AP) __ Missouri's Republican Party and a former Democratic national chairman have called for a Democratic-aligned group to mothball a get-out-the-vote flier showing a 1960s snapshot of a firefighter hosing a black man and headlined: ``This is what they used to do to keep us from voting.

2. Boo-hoo
I guess that image is a bit too reality-based for them. I think it should be used EVEN MORE now.

4. And for all the women who aren't voting this year -
shouldn't they see photos of the suffrage movement at the turn of the century? It might help a few remember the war fought to let them vote.

5. Ah, OK to twist events from decades ago to try and smear Kerry
but not to honestly show a long established pattern of behavior aimed at disenfranchising an entire ethnic voting block. I see.

Folks, take the time to teach history to your kids, cuz the establishment sure as hell doesn't intend to be honest about it.

6. Earth to Missouri GOP : That IS what they used to do so what's your beef?
Old Harry would set them straight.

Man in crowd, "Give 'em Hell, Harry!"
HST, "I tell the truth and the Republicans think it is Hell!"

8. here's the problem:
Its a fundamental misunderstanding that the GOP and the conservatives have on issues of race, gender, choice and other liberal 'issues' that they have 'conceded'

there's the problem right there... The GOP thinks they conceded and as such (so their logic goes) they don't want to talk about it. They honestly think that the whole issue of race equality and gender equality in the US is a done thing and that we liberals are beating a dead horse with it.

That's where all this 'don't use history against us... see we've changed OK?' nonsense comes from. Not to mention all the Affirmative Action dismantling they are doing.

What's really screwed up is that the GOP is running, at break-neck speeds, back to their old ways of good old boy racism (and sexism too)

Its almost as if one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing. And, strangely, that comes as no surprise to me.

7. The GOP should just stop praising the CCC and Bob Jones University and
spreading rumors about their opponents illegitimate "black" daughter and referring to black colleagues as "sambos." In other words if republicans would stop being racists people might stop pointing out their racism.

9. Is it truthful?
Is the picture of an actual event that took place where firefighter used a firehose to keep African-Americans away from the poll? If yes, then what is the problem? Stating the truth and the facts should never be called a dirty trick. The truth can never be dirty or a trick.

Hell, if I were making it, I would have gone to more extremes, showing lynchings and riflemen, KKK members, etc. to drive the point home that there is still a systematic effort to disenfranchise minorities in this country. It is just now all prettified, but beneath the exterior of legal action, laws, and statutes is the same ugly hate and bigotry.

10. of course they don't like it...
Because of the crap they pulled in St. Louis in 2000.

I'll refresh the repukes memories: LOTS of urban (many minority) voters in traditionally Democratic precincts were turned away from the polls in 2000 in St. Louis, because the Repukes turned to an 'activist judge' to stop the extended balloting time that had been granted in order to allow everyone waiting in line - already present - to cast their votes. The polling places weren't kept open so we could round up swarms of voters; they were kept open to allow people who were already there and had been waiting patiently to vote.

12. Do you know where to find a copy of the poster, CW? (Great initials, btw)

I'd love to pass it around. A friend of mine art-directed a series of ads along these lines for the NAACP to recruit new members a number of years ago. He won a few awards for them too.
