In the bluegrass state, many a voter has been heard to say that they vote the person and not the party. In Louisville, Ann Northup, the Republican incumbant, is in a tight race with Democratic challenger, Tony Miller. In my travels there, I've seen cars and yards with signs and stickers for Northup, but with a Kerry/Edwards sticker thrown in. In Lexington, the hot issue in local council races is the purchase of the local water utility, with the City actively pursuing condemnation. RWE AG, the giant German conglomerate that owns Kentucky American Water, is pouring money into these races in support of candidates who oppose the condemnation. "Buy the Water Company" signs out number the "No Government Takeover" signs by at least a 10 to 1 margin. Ironically, RWE is 40% owned by German municipalities...It's okay for German cities to own our water, but not our city? I have seen yardsigns and bumbperstickers for "Buying the WaterCompany" and bush for President. I've also seen signs for opposing candidates in the same yard, which, I presume, must be Mr. and Mrs. having a difference of opinion. One sore spot is the Gay marriage ban amendment on the ballot, signs reduced to yeah or nay. But like Mark Twain said once, "At the end of the world, I moving to Kentucky, because everything happens there 20 years later."
