"That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

Absolute Monarchy: an idealised form of government, a monarchy where the ruler has the power to rule their country and citizens freely with no laws or legally-organized direct opposition telling the monarchy what to do, although some religious authority may be able to discourage the monarch from some acts.
Democracy: a form of government under which the power to alter the basic laws and forms of government lies with the voting citizenry, referred to as "the people", and all decisions are made by representatives who act by their consent, as enforced by elections and the rule of law.
Dictatorship: a government headed by a dictator or more generally to any authoritarian or totalitarian government. It is often equivalent to a police state, but the term "dictatorship" refers to the way the leaders gain and hold power, not the watch kept on the citizens.
Kleptocracy: a form of government that means literally "rule by thieves". It is the end-point of political corruption, where no pretence of honesty remains, and the government of a country exists solely to enrich its rulers and to perpetuate their rule. Kleptocrats often use money laundering and anonymous banking as a way of protecting and concealing their ill-gotten gains.
Totalitarianism: any political system in which a citizen is totally subject to state authority in all aspects of day-to-day life. It goes well beyond dictatorship or typical police state measures, and even beyond those measures required to sustain total war with other states. It involves constant brainwashing achieved by propaganda to erase any potential for dissent, by anyone, including most especially the state's agents.
