Did Anyone Notice Jon Stewart's Hands Shaking?
I think he knew that he was going to do something that would guarantee that he'd never do another show on CNN, that his reputation would turn to mud, that once he did it he could never turn back.

And he did it anyway.

The son of a bitch thought that he might actually make people stop and think for a moment about journalism and democracy and truth.

Jon Stewart, you are my fucking G-d. I loved you before - and I say that as a straight man - but now I love you. You are one of the most decent people that television has ever allowed to exist. I have so much fucking respect for you (I almost never openly curse on this forum, and only do so in deference to you).

To me, that was one of the most raw and real moments I have ever witnessed on TV (that wasn't "shocking," in the Fox channel sense of the word). How often do you see a sincere, naked plea for decency and truth? I don't know what Jon Stewart was thinking in the moments leading up to his appearance, but it seemed to me that he looked down deep into his soul and knew he had to do it.

Jon Stewart is the icepick to the massive chunk of frozen bullshit that is television journalism.

1. He did seem "raw"
Maybe too much coffee, or not enough sleep (new baby). Also I'm sure it's hard for him to not be his funny, kind self, because that's who he is. But sometimes, you gotta take a stand.

Jon Stewart has more CREDIBILITY in his little finger than all four of you pathetic corporate media whores. Hurt like a bitch didn't it, suckers? Jon Stewart slapped you around like the pathetic, sniveling boot lickers you are.

I'm getting my news from The Daily Show from now on, CNN is nothing but tabloid National-Enquirer level CRAP.

12. I respectfully disagree
He did look like he was putting himself out there, but then, when you have a kid, your life changes. You stop thinking about yourself, and you realize that you influence the future your child will have.

He is so brave, a really cool guy. I have to hand it to him.

He was sober as a good judge. He was neither drunk, nor stoned. He was more articulate than either Tucker or Paul, and the audience LOVED IT.

6. It was tremendous. He could have cracked jokes, he could have plugged
the book bigtime...but he simply stuck to his guns and trashed CNN in particular and the media in general and left Carlson totally off balance and looking downright stupid.

Jon once thought about having a nice 11:30 pm talk show....but I heard him in an interview recently where he said that he knew he had something good on Comedy Central...freedom to knock the system. He signed a 4 year contract. After that, who knows? He probably has more options than if he was a total prostitute to the networks...

10. I didn't see the real thing, only the digital clip of his appearance
He was totally honest and I agree with you about the guts it must have taken.

Maybe it was just because I saw it on my computer, but the way the audience would laugh while JS kept a straight face was kind of surreal. Something about it reminded me of the movie "Network"; then again, Jon Stewart was no Howard Beale (at least not in the sense of having lost his marbles.) Then again, Beale was totally honest, too.

A unique moment in a really unusual day in television.

18. Beale, Yes, But Also The Drunk Guy
Who came to a meeting to stop a local toxic incinerator (this is Jersey, after all) right after a funeral of a friend who had died from carcinogens. He seemed like a clean, cut guy, but he spoke both nakedly and eloquently (minus the slurred speech). I never forgot that, and I didn't think I'd bring it up, but Jon Stewart reminded me of that man today (I don't think he was literally drunk, in fact I think he was sober in the extreme).

11. He was literally begging the two right before commercial break.
Jon was serious as could be, clasping his hands together pleaing for the 2 to just have a real serious discussion with him, and the music starts playing and F*cker Carlson goes into happy commercial break announcement mode. It was heart-breaking to see, because I never have seen Jon so serious before - I almost got misty.

He's p.o.'d at what the media does NOT do for America, and he called out both Tucker and Begala for being part of the charade. Stewart skewered both of them. It was beautiful. I've always been a Begala fan, but Stewart opened my eyes tonight. They really are hurting America. Just like Jon said, we NEED a media, that doesn't just read the parties' press releases. It sure would be nice.

19. JS just cruised into Lenny Bruce territory for me.
In honesty I mean, not style, obviously. But he *has* crossed a line. It's not just whether he'll be on CNN again (and given their cynicism, I bet he *will* be if they think it'll pick up their ratings); it's that he's gone from "safe, entertainer" to "dangerous." He actually has been toeing that line for quite a while, for those of us who watch him regularly; but as long as he stayed on Comedy Central he wasn't a threat, as far as the right wing establishment was concerned. Now, though, I bet he is. Anyway, at least as much as Franken is. Which is maybe, you know, not such a bad thing, all things considered. I just hope he has a really thick skin and a healthy personal life; he's going to need it...

29. I think he was doing his damnedest to maintain control
Tucker was being a class A jerk, and in the face of that Jon was trying to make a calm and persistent argument. Boy I was shaking right there with him, I was hopping mad too. Jon Stewart is an incredibly intelligent guy. Can you even begin to imagine how insulting it is to not only him, but to all of us, that people actually look to a comedy show for the real news. I think that makes him very angry. He is in a position he does not deserve, nor did he court. He gets critisized for not being a journalist, when he's not. Yet its the 'real' journalists that are the jokes.
I totally respect Jon Stewart. Will it harm his repuation, not a shred, because those that love him feel exactly the same way. He is funny, witty and has integrity, and thank goodness for him.

STEWART: See, the thing is, we need your help. Right now, you're helping the politicians and the corporations. And we're left out there to mow our lawns.

BEGALA: By beating up on them? You just said we're too rough on them when they make mistakes.

STEWART: No, no, no, you're not too rough on them. You're part of their strategies. You are partisan, what do you call it, hacks.

How does one play it after the download? Is it in QuickTime? (I can't use that).
Can the file be opened in Windows MediaPlayer? I'm a computer idiot, please don't make fun. I am dying to see the video! I read the transcript, but pictures speak louder than words.

Any tekkie help here would be most appreciated, thanks!

129. You must have Bittorrent installed to download the actual video file.
http://bittorrent.com/

Download the client, install it, then once you've downloaded the .torrent file of the Crossfire clip, open the .torrent file and Bittorrent will allow you to choose where to save the video file to.

Please leave the torrent window open for a while once you've finished the video download - it helps seed the file so more people can download.

Torrents rule. Great way to download.

60. he must love his country very much ...

I bet the Bushies are going to harp about how his hands trembled, and they won't even acknowledge that when people of Jon Stewart's calibre are upset -- like when John Kerry's eyes look sad, or Al Gore and Howard Dean shout so the whole room knows how they feel, or Michael Moore chokes up when he's talking about his hometown -- that something has gone seriously wrong and those in power MUST stop before it's too late.

There's a guy I know from the Middle East, who is very critical of not just US foreign policy, but America itself. I made a tape of Jon Stewart's show, and persuaded him to take it home to watch. The next day I asked him how he felt about it, and he said he thought it was funny and that Stewart made some excellent points, better than CNN. And I pointed out that clearly the Daily Show audience was in agreement with the host, so there must be SOME Americans who are intelligent and well-informed enough to know about the issues. That was the beginning of a door opening up, and so the other day, when my friend was grumbling about the US and Ariel Sharon being against Arabs, I noted that Jon Stewart is Jewish and there are plenty of American Jews who don't agree with the administration. And he calmed down and agreed that this was true. So the very fact that guys like Stewart and Moore are making their views known is helping show people from other cultures that Americans aren't all following behind Bush.

62. I Imagine That They'll Talk About His Open Endorsement Of Kerry
Stewart did his best to pretend he was objective, but I think he decided that the moment had passed for such things. Or rather, that this is an utterly bankrupt notion of "objectivity." Pretending not to have convictions is stupid, but you should be searching for truth, not nuetrality.

When you think about it, this is one of Stewart's big gripes with the media. They mistake the impression of nuetrality for the search for truth.

63. great point!
Because our culture equates "objective" with being fair and trustworthy, there is an increasing tendency for authority figures to put on the appearance of objectivity, even if they actually aren't. And when you think about it, there are many ways in which the establishment -- government, business, academia, the media -- have a definite ideology, yet act as if their view is the "normal" one to have, and shouldn't have to be justified. If Jon Stewart wants to puncture the impression of neutrality, more power to him!

Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 10:59 PM by Lisa
If they feel they have to issue that kind of reassurance, they either think that viewers are too dumb to figure out whether or not a source is credible -- or they're trying to convince us of something that isn't so (like shady retailers who brag about their wares being cheaper and more reliable than anyone else's). Either way, they don't seem to think much of the audience.

Oh, and don't get me started on FOX. "We report." Well, if you're a news show, isn't that what you're supposed to do? It's like a grocery store putting up a "We sell food" sign. "You decide." Decide what? Whether or not you're credible? Do you mean that we're not supposed to make a decision on anything until we've seen your broadcast? Bizarre.

Jon has taken a bold step, one I never thought about. He begged the media to work for the people. I've called them whores, I've called them shills, I've called them mindless drones, I never once thought that maybe I should plead with the media to help me.

Jon was truly the Everyman tonight.

Which is common with comedians, and it was hard for him to be a "dick" to these guys. But then again, there were a range of emotions going on (I believe), and sometimes you have to make the people standing in front of you uncomfortable to do the right thing.

My heart is pounding. And Tucker Carlson is exposed as the 14 year old whom he really is. I cannot believe he gets paid as much as he does. I also cannot believe that noone, noone has done what Jon did, until now. When was the Fairness Doctrine repealed!? And it took twenty fucking years?! What an outrage! I stopped watching the god damned news in the mid 80's, and it took until 2004 for a comedian to fucking call them on it. I think I'm going to have a heart attack. I feel sick.
Thank you Jon. Thank you. I knew you were a hero the moment you sat on that stage at the Daily Show. I knew it. Now we all know it.
I'm sorry to say that the patient is in much worse shape than I thought. But maybe there is a chance of recovery.

I loved Jon telling him he wasn't his trained monkey.

I had tried B4 2 send Jon 'atta boy' emails 'n have never been successful in finding a link. He deserves a huge 'WAY 2 GO' 4 attempting 2 make begala & carlson take a hard look in the mirror 'n recognize their shallowness. I am reminded of Jon Stewart speaking after his show started taping again after 9/11. It was incredibly moving and brought me to tears. I was completely taken off guard, and didn't get to tape it or anything. He shook that night too.

All I remember is that he spoke about Martin Luther King Jr., about the country, bigotry... I thought he was going to cry. I did.

Thank you for providing links. I will definitely write a letter of appreciation. Can anyone tell me how to archive or save this thread so I can access it easily in the future?

What's even funnier is that they couldn't print "dick". It took me five minutes to figure out what the fuck they were talking about, when they took the liberty to substitute for "dick". That's about the saddest thing I've ever seen. Like some ten year old could possibly find injury in that? Like some ten year old would even be fucking read a newspaper? Like "dick" would be offensive compared to 70,000 dead people in Darfur!!!!!! Fuck the media. I am outraged.

However, it's hilarious that the FCC can't touch The Daily Show about that. Ha, ha, ha.

132. I just sent him a thank you letter.
Sincerely thanking him for saying what desperately needed to be said and encouraging him to keep up the good work.
