It's our local Moonie rag, the Washington Times, and they are in full wingnut spin mode.
In Davenport, Iowa, earlier this year Vice-President Cheney brought up his daughter's sexual orientation at a campaign event in a transparent attempt to soften his image and that of the Republican Party. Obviously he felt that it was proper to do so. When the leader of his party pushed for a Constitutional amendment which would relegate his daughter to a kind of permanent second-class citizenship, the Vice-President and his wife stood mute. Not long ago, Alan Keyes called Ms. Cheney a "selfish hedonist" in reference to her lifestyle. The Cheneys' response to this aspersion, when cast by a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, was hushed and dispassionate. The "pretty angry father" and the "pretty indignant mom" were nowhere in evidence. Now, however, the Democratic candidate for President, while responding directly to a question regarding homosexuality being a "choice"; has respectfully invoked the name of arguably one of the most famous homosexuals in America, and suggested that she be asked if she "chose" her sexuality. Republican strategist Charlie Black rails against this "despicable invasion of Mary Cheney's privacy"; and the Cheney family's demonstrably selective outrage is searing in its intensity ("Kerry remark angers Cheneys", Front Page,Friday). Yet Ms. Cheney accepted a salary from the Coors Brewing company to help the company in its well-publicized outreach efforts to the gay community. This pretty much renders the "privacy" issue moot. As for the rest, Lynne Cheney is correct. "Tawdry political tricks" are indeed at play here. But they are not being practiced by John Kerry. Sincerely, Me
