Fundies and O'Neill "proof texting"

It involves finding statements within the bible, taking them out of context of the rest of the passage, and presenting them as "truth" to back up their outrageous claims. Examples: slavery is ok, etc.

This is exactly what we heard O'Neill do on Nightline tonight. He quoted out of context sentences/passages from his "book" and Kerry's and presented them as fact.

Proof texting has been soundly beaten down by any and all serious theologians. Serious biblical study requires critical thinking skills, historical analysis, and contextual interpretation. In other words, more than a modicum of intelligence :).

It's a scary tactic, though, and the sheeple seem to want to believe these black and white, no gray allowed, statements.
