What am I DOING on Election Day??? >>>>how bout you?
I'm going to be calling people to have them drop off their mail-in ballots in Oregon. I will have already voted and early in the day we will start to get an idea of how the voting is going. THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE VOTE BY MAIL in OREGON!

-----------------------------------------------------------
But what about the rest of the nation? I know many will be casting absentee ballots ahead of time which frees them up to help local offices monitor voting. They can answer questions, ensure people are not turned away and get a chance to cast a provisional ballot. We need to see what kind of directions can be given for folks to head to a new location or be BUSSED to a new location if a precinct's systems go down. There are many, many, many ways people can encourage voting.

If you live near an area where people are likely to be intimidated from voting, you can go out in days ahead and canvass letting those people know their rights and privilege of voting and how they don't need to fear any ramifications from law enforcement, etc.

I truly believe we have to be vigilant and guard our vote and the votes of others.

------------------------------------------------------
This is a hopeful sign pulled from daily Kos:

This is an election about serious life and death issues and it is critical that every person who wants to vote can do so without interference and with confidence that their vote will be counted. We must work together to promote voting and voting rights. So the Nevada State Democratic Party has launched a statewide "Voter Rights Project". Our efforts are in conjunction with the Kerry-Edwards Campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

The goal - a voting rights attorney in every priority precinct in the battleground states

We have created the world's largest virtual law firm in the country dedicating to promoting and protecting the vote.

We have a Kerry-Edwards counsel in every state and every key county in Battleground states to protect voting rights on election day.

We have hired DNC Voting Protection Coordinators in every battleground state to design and implement voting rights and election protection plans.

Nationally, we will have thousands of Volunteer Voting Rights Attorneys in every priority precinct on Election Day.

From now until election day, we are conducting intensive trainings on line, in battleground states and in coordination with our field staff.

We will promote Early Vote and Vote By Mail and protect voters who vote early or by mail.

We are investing record amounts in voter education and empowerment via Mail, Phones, Print and Electronic Media

DNC and VPC lawyers are reviewing the ballots in every priority county and state to make sure ballots are clear and easy to vote.
Our Kerry-Edwards, DNC, and VPC lawyers are also ensuring that election officials have made met all bi-lingual requirements and have made appropriate provisions so that disabled voters and older voters can cast their votes.

2. Vacation day to work where ever needed on election day in OHIO
I have volunteered here in Ohio and we have a planning meeting on Monday night.
I will do what ever necessary.
Meanwhile, I am doing door to door canvassing on a daily baisis.

It is only 2 1/2 weeks left, not a big commitment.

You may not think it's a big commitment; but it makes a BIG difference! Thanks. I work on my weekends off canvassing here in ME. Phone banking on weekdays off.

5. Takin the day off to help get people to the polls
Hopefully I'll be done with the absentee voting drive and all those ballots will be turned in so that I can focus my efforts on contacting people and coordinating transportation to the polls.

6. another question I have is how folks are ensuring overseas ballots
I know many are military...and military tend to vote for incumbent and for repubs...but many others are expats who want Le Bush OUT!

ANyone know? Any of you Kerry operatives reading? Any of you media types reading it? Help us out.

8. Driving Kerry voters to the polls
My buddy and I are each renting 8-passenger vans and running shuttles from designated pick-up points. Lots of senior citizens need rides! As well as people with no cars or money for gas. We're going to have fun.

10. How much does the rental run y'all?
I'd like to see if our organization can afford vans. Although they all may be rented for that day already. We may be able to organize something with the Coalition of Ministers since a lot of the churches already have vans.

13. We're paying $47/day through Enterprise...
...plus gas. We passed the hat at a club meeting and got around $120 from about 20 people there. Others are bringing lawn chairs and snacks for the waiting areas.

It's going to be fun. The senior center folks did most of the organizing of their folks and our community center helped with the rest.

15. great idea!
i'm going to see if my organization is willing to fork over some cash for the rental...or use some of our church contacts to acquire a van. If none of these things comes through..then the passing around the hat idea..should work fine!

i like the folding chairs ideas too.

18. We are officially "non-partisan"...
...about who we give rides to -- that's how we were able to get access to the community center -- but our organizers assure us they're passing the word to Kerry voters. Anyway, the precincts are heavily (90%+) Democratic, so we're not worried.

We have signups for 60 people already, more will signup as elections get closer, I'm sure.

19. yeah..we've done a lot of non partisan work too
would you mind giving me some advice on the organization of this thing? How are y'all getting the word out and finding people to sign up in advance for a ride? I could consider getting the word out to churches so that we could use their infrastructure in order to get the word out. This would also give us access to a meeting place and possibly vans. How does y'alls work?

24. You're on the right track...
...with getting the existing groups to organize their people. The way it worked for us was my buddy volunteers at the senior center and is married to the director of the community center, so we were just sitting around at dinner one night and came up with the plan.

We were just going to do it and foot the bill ourselves, but I mentioned the plan at my local Democratic club meeting and people got excited and wanted to help. The leader suggested we pass the hat and that's how it all came about.

No real plan, it just happened.

I can't do a few things (like voting) on election day. However, Saturday I will be volunteering on an all-day phone bank and I'll be canvassing door to door all of next week... every little bit counts...
