I had a discussion with some hard core Republicans that hate Bush's war in Iraq, but would not vote for Kerry because "his voting record shows that he is a socialist".

These people get their news from Fox, and don't read anything, so I assume that Fox has this meme going.

they own a small business, where they make 22 times what the people that work for them do, and the workers become wards of the state in their old age because they never make enough money to save for their futures.

These owners always forget that their business would not operate if they had to bear the cost of the services it takes to insure customers and products are accessible. You know, things like roads, communication infrastructure, water, police, firemen and all. They act like they plopped down in the middle of a desert, and all success is due to their innately superior skills and intelligence, and the poor should just suck it up and get their own.

I ignore it. It's not worth arguing about, and the people saying it aren't open to education. They are the ones who make a fair amount of money and are afraid one nickle of theirs will go to some lazy welfare mother who has it easy living on welfare. 19. I had this conversation at work yesterday. Here's what I did...

An "undecided" voter said that he's concerned with the possibility of increased taxes on the rich. I addressed his concern by talking about the national debt, explaining why it is a serious problem, and asked if he has any better ideas for controlling the debt. Not only did this work on him, but a Freeper listening in agreed with me.
