The Sinclair Broadcasting Group is putting pressure on their local TV affiliates to preempt primetime programming in order to run the anti-Kerry program, "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal," only days before the November election. The LA Times published this story on Saturday, and many other news outlets have since picked it up.

Sinclair Broadcasting Group and its management have a long history of supporting conservative candidates, through their financial contributions and by using their substantial media power. Today the DNC released this press release which includes a lot of information about partisan activities by Sinclair. The DNC will be filing a complaint with the FEC on Tuesday.

This is the same Sinclair Broadcasting Group that told its affiliates not to show an episode of Nightline earlier this year honoring the men and women of the US Armed Forces who were killed while serving in Iraq. At the time, their explanation was: "we do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content." You can read the quote yourself here. (Oh, the hypocrisy.)

The decision by Sinclair Broadcasting to run an anti-Kerry smear only days before the presidential election is a clear case of "political statements disguised as news content." It is a clear misuse of their power, a breach of public trust, and a clear violation of campaign finance law.

Let me tell you, they're NOT afraid in the least of the license challenges that Steve Soto has proposed. I mean, what's the point? If they air it, then fine, challenge away, I'm all for taking revenge on them. But the goal should be to shut down the broadcast before it happens.
What they're deathly afraid of is the stink of this thing will somehow waft over to their advertisers. That's of course why they're not selling local ad time for this show. Having worked in the ad department of Sinclair's competitor, I know that local Sinclair stations make over 60% of their ad revenue from their nightly 6pm newscast. That's their bread and butter. You make a concerted effort to go after their top advertisers on the 5pm/6pm news hour and you'll have the executives spiking this show so fast it'll be amazing.



Again, I have no basis for judging what would work best, though common sense suggests that going after these guys on every front simultaneously would probably be the best bet.

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I am writing to you to express my concern and objection to your decision to advertise on any station owned or affiliated with Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Inc.

As you may be aware, Sinclair is attempting to violate the spirit of campaign laws by running what amounts to a 42 minute long attack ad against John Kerry in the days just prior to the November Presidential Election, in violation of the spirit, if not the law itself, regarding political advertising as per the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Law, passed by Congress two years ago.

Sinclair is claiming this to be a "news documentary" but it is nothing of the sort. It is, in short, a 42 minute infomercial for those with a vested interest in smearing the character of a fine, upstanding statesman, John Kerry, in hopes of directly affecting the outcome of the Presidential election. Sinclair is offering no equal time to Kerry to rebut this nasty attack by Bush, which, by the way, will cost the Bush Campaign nothing whatsoever, since it is being cast as a "news documentary."

Sinclair's offer to interview Kerry is laughable...there is no way that would be a non-partisan solution. They are basically inviting Kerry to come in and be interviewed and sandbagged by a bunch of business moguls who have every interest in the world in Bush winning.

I regret to inform you that until you publicly announce that you are pulling all advertising from sinclair Broadcasting Group, I will no longer patronize your restaurants. As much as I enjoy your food, I cannot support any business that supports people who wish to break the law and undermine our democracy. It pains me to have to resort to this, however, I remain committed in my stated demands. It could put them out of business!

I am contacting you today to complain about Sinclair Broadcast Group’s misuse of the public’s television channel airwaves, which, among other duties, you administer for us, the citizens of the United States. I am writing specifically about their proposed broadcast of the political program titled, Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, just a few days before the election. This program is clearly politically biased, and is not to be balanced by any programming for the other side. This practice is clearly in violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the laws regarding political programming broadcast on the public airwaves.

In addition, I would like to direct your attention to this same company’s practice of airing politically biased programming immediately after the local news on a daily and ongoing basis, which also is a violation of these same laws (again, of the spirit, if not the letter). Furthermore, this same company has refused to run fair political advertisements from one party that are legal under the law, while continuing to air advertisements from the other party without restriction.

As an owner in trust of these airwaves, I feel that I must protest when they are misused or used against my interest. It is in my interest to have fair, unbiased reportage; fair, unbiased political advertisement; and fair, unbiased programming broadcast on my airwaves. It is against my interest when the practices in these areas are not fair or are biased, as they clearly are here. In addition, this company’s use of my airwaves is a public trust, and by their misuse this company has abrogated that trust. Access to my nation’s public airwaves is a privilege, not a right, and as a condition of this privilege individuals and companies are required to adhere to certain standards of conduct, as well as to assume certain responsibilities. This company has both ignored some of these responsibilities, and failed to adhere to some of these standards. To the best of my knowledge and belief, neither this adherence nor this responsibility is optional in a company that is licensed for this privilege. Certainly, your Commission has not been hesitant about fining several companies involved in the transmission of inappropriate language or other inappropriate content over these same public communication channels.

As a result, I would like to request that your Commission conduct an investigation of this company, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., and their actions in regard to these three matters. I would like to also request that your Commission take appropriate actions, including fines and, if necessary, revocation of license to broadcast on public airwaves, as appropriate to halt this misuse, prevent future misuses, and ameliorate past misuses by this company. I would like to suggest that it might be appropriate, if it is proper under the law, to fine individuals responsible for this misuse as well as the company, since these decisions may have been made without the consent of the entire complement of company officers or the company’s Board of Directors. In addition, I would also like to request that you pursue a legal action in a United States District Court with jurisdiction in this matter, in order to obtain an injunction against this company to prevent the program titled, Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, or any portion or derivative of this program, from being broadcast on the public airwaves prior to the Presidential Election in November 2004. I must point out that this matter is both important and urgent, since the proposed violation of the law is imminent and since it may do irreparable harm to our political process; I request that these matters be followed up on with the utmost possible dispatch. As my representatives in trust of my airwaves, it is your clear and solemn duty to pursue these matters with diligence.

To save duplication of effort, let me make you aware that I am also contacting my Congressional delegation, the Republican National Committee, my local Republican Party offices, the Federal Election Commission, and several news organizations in my local area and around the nation in the affected areas in regard to these matters. My final request is that you make the results of these proceedings available to our national news organizations for dissemination to the citizens of our nation or, failing any action, that you make the reasons why you cannot act known to us all in the same manner.

6. Go After the Real Owners of TV Stations that hire Sinclair

Many of the 62 TV stations are only managed/programmed by Sinclair, not owned by them. We should turn our attention to the real owners of those TV stations and convince them that the Smith Brothers are threatening those owners' huge investments.

Sending email to the Smith brothers is hopeless. According to official SEC documents, the four brothers control 95% of the voting shares of Sinclair Broadcasting. They inherited in from daddy. The Smith brothers make up 4 out of the 8 boardmembers. This is their own personal fiefdom. They own a much smaller percentage of the total number of shares, but those other shareholders have fewer votes per share.

The Smiths are not only risking bad reactions from the 50% of the public who don't like George W., they also are risking prime time profits to the station owners - to carry a program with no commercials.

Some time shortly before the November 2 presidential elections, Sinclair Broadcasting Group is planning on having its 64 television stations, which reach an estimated 25% of American households, preempt their normally scheduled prime-time programming to air Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, a "documentary" attacking and distorting the anti-war activities of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry after the Vietnam War. Although Sinclair challenges the newsworthiness of broadcasts, such as an edition of ABC's Newsline back in April during which Ted Koppel honored our fallen soldiers in Iraq, and forbid their ABC stations from showing it, they are brazenly claiming that this proposed broadcast of Stolen Honor is "news", so that they can get around Equal Time restrictions on broadcasts of a political nature.

Sinclair has been free to air their conservative viewpoint in the past, and though it is a shame that such a powerful media conglomerate would choose to reject any semblance of impartiality, it has not been illegal up to this point. I demand that you revoke their broadcasting license for this flagrant attempt to use our free and public airwaves to influence our national elections in favor of their preferred candidate.

Respectfully, I am writing to register a strong complaint about your company's intention to air "Stolen Honor" on Oct. 23 in prime time on your affiliates. I am one of millions of Americans who do not support the Bush/Cheney ticket. (If you recall, a numerical majority of Americans voted against the same ticket in 2000.) From all the evidence, what you plan to do constitutes an unethical, and probably illegal in-kind contribution to the President's campaign for re-election. It is also inflammatory and offensive to many Americans, and in my opinion a breach of all journalistic standards for fairness and objectivity. The various explanations I have read from you and other representatives of SBGI have been, at best, disingenuous.

Here is what I have so far done or propose to do, and to urge my friends and family to do, and to promote as appropriate responses on my own websites and on as many internet forums as I can reach:

1) Contact every advertiser identified as an advertiser on any show on any Sinclair affiliate, and announce my intention to boycott their products unless they withdraw *all* advertising from said affiliates (I have done so with 22 advertisers to date);

2) Contact the parent networks of each SBGI affiliate (CBS, WB, NBC, ABC, Fox) and register a strong complaint and urge the network to sanction its affiliates if they show this advertisement disguised as "news" (I have contacted WB and NBC so far);

These are steps I intend to take, or have already taken. I know several other people who are considering or have undertaken similar steps. I believe that your company is overstepping the boundaries of fair conduct and press freedom in this instance in a blatantly partisan effort to exert undue influence on the democratic process. I am, by the way, a registered Independent, not a Democrat, and I consider myself a political moderate, John Kerry is a U.S. Senator, and unlike our current President, served with valor as a volunteer in the Vietnam conflict. His actions protesting the war are not a disgrace because he served first, and because that war was unnecessary and brutally costly for our nation, as most historians and indeed most Americans believe today. For your network to participate in a smear campaign against such a man speaks only of your company's own lack of honor. You have ample opportunity before Oct. 23 to redeem that honor.

I work for a University group that focuses on how local news covers stories, specifically in regards to the upcoming election. We cover 11 major markets and analyze the content an bias of coverage of election related stories. The importance of this is that more people get their news from local TV news than any other source.

I live in an area free from the grasp of Sinclair's clutches and I was unaware of how unabashedly partisan they were until today. I was assigned clips from Philadelphia's ABC affiliate and the news in general was laughable, they don't call it Action News for nothing . . . At any rate, a clip came up entitled "Hyman's Point" and for a minute and a half, Mark Hyman lambasted Kerry from all sides, no counterpoint, nothing on Bush, just Kerry bashing. At first I thought it was a joke, until I looked through the archives of footage, and I found a "Hyman's Point" for every day! After one of these, I was pissed, and I truly empathize with those of you who have to deal with this asshole, or people who believe his bullshit every day.

Seeing the way that Mark Hyman flaunts his partisanship, I don't see anyway that he or any of his cohorts will budge in the slightest. I'll help in the cause to stop the broadcast, but I don't think that anything, aside from a Project Mayhem-like act will stop his ideologue rhetoric from poisoning the minds of many undecided voters.

I sent every executive I could find listed on their website an e-mail when they ordered their ABC stations to not air Nightline last spring. I wrote them again this week reminding them that they will not be tolerated. I am also a media buyer meaning that I make decisions for my advertising clients on where advertising dollars are spent. I let SINclair know that neither myself nor anyone I know will spend any money on their propaganda network and am contacting the FCC.

Now some members of Congress have already contacted the FCC, but we must be heard directly - fill the inboxes at the FCC. Fill the inboxes at SINclair. Call them up. This has to be outrage on the highest levels.

This shit has got to stop. Unlike last spring where I only sent one e-mail to SINclair, I will not let up this time. I am pissed. This is abolutely a total disregard for responsible broadcasting. If Powell is offended by Janet's breast, then he should be completely disgusted at what SINclair has done and continues to do. It must stop.

This is a gratis airing of a TV program produced by political partisans for the sole and express purpose of slandering presidential candidate John Kerry and besmirching his sterling service record as a decorated US combat veteran.

I realize that you do not make programming decisions for Sinclair Broadcasting, but you are nonetheless a supporter of their distinctly un-American abuse of the public trust extended all broadcasters. As such, you will be subjected to considerable negative publicity and will be targeted by national and local boycotts.

<company or business name> may be individually blameless, but the time for half-measures is past and the net of public outrage will ensnare the largest and smallest fishes alike. I'm just writing to complain about the Sinclair Broadcasting Group's decision to air "Stolen Honor" on many of its affiliate stations in the last ten days of the election. As an independent voter who voted for Ralph Nader in the last election, I am not motivated by any political party. I tend to vote against any incumbent in any election. It is my belief that the incumbent has had a few years to screw up the country, state or town he or she is governing, so now it's time to let someone else screw it up. I am instead motivated by fairness. Do I think Michael Moore's so called "documentary" was fair? No. But at least he made people pay (choose) to see it. It was not forced upon anyone and he is not allowed to air it on free television. I feel if the Sinclair Group wants to make their so called "documentary" available to the public, you should release it in theatres or on DVD, just as Mr. Moore did with his piece. Fair is fair. I ask that you block this abuse of the public airwaves (and public trust) and not air "Stolen Honor" on broadcast television. Thank you.

I composed a letter and sent it all over the place. It is sad that we even have to do this. If they want to put it on pay-per-view...then go for it, but to force it on viewers is wrong! Here is what I wrote:

The decision by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group (SBG) to broadcast “Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal” is nothing more than propaganda. It is a shame our media has allowed itself to become involved in this type of dishonest and underhanded deception.

SBG refused to allow the “Nightline” episode where the names of our soldiers who were killed in action were to be read. They justified this action by stating, “We do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content.” And, although I do not feel that show was making a political statement, I can respect that SBG felt it was and decided not to enter the “fray.” But now, they are preparing to broadcast a clearly partisan film weeks before a national election?! I guess the comment from SBG should have read, “We do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content unless they clearly support the current administration!”

I support the rights of SBG and its owners to hold whatever political belief they like. However, I draw a line when those beliefs are presented in an unfair manner. If you believe this “documentary” is so important, then place your money behind it and get it released into the theatres! It is unethical to release it into a “captive” market and claim it is news! This type of behavior is reminiscent of the old Soviet Union.

Would the people at SBG be as understanding if it were Fahrenheit 9-11 being shown on network TV, after having regular programming preempted? Somehow, I believe they would see that as a “political statement disguised as news!” This is the same thing!

This behavior is partisan, dishonest, unethical, putrid, and un-American! Leave the propaganda to the politicians!

Network airing anti-Kerry film awarded Bush Special Forces military contract

Sinclair Broadcasting Group, under fire for ordering its 62 networks to broadcast a film sharply critical of John Kerry's opposition to the Vietnam War, is a major investor in a company recently awarded a military contract by the Bush Administration, RAW STORY has learned.

Jadoo Power Systems, Inc., a producer of portable power systems, announced Sept. 28 that it had been awarded a contract to supply its products, which are used for covert surveillance operations, to US Special Operations Command. According to the SOCOM website, SOCOM "plans, directs, and executes special operations in the conduct of the War on Terrorism."

Jadoo, a Folsom, California company, is "a wholly owned subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. as well as other individuals."

A Jadoo press release (in PDF format) reveals that in February, 2003, President Bush was personally briefed by the CEO of Jadoo, Larry Bawden, about Jadoo products.

For the 2004 election, Sinclair executives have donated nearly $59,000 to the Bush-Cheney campaign or the Republican National Committee (RNC), including a $50,000 gift to the RNC from Sinclair Vice President Fred Smith.

Sinclair Broadcasting (NASDAQ: SBGI) announced this week that it intends to air an anti-Kerry film on all of its 62 television stations, many of which are in battleground states. The film, Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, claims that Kerry's anti-war activities undermined morale of POWs then held in Vietnam.

Sinclair received national attention earlier this year when it preempted the April 30th Nightline television program on which host Ted Koppel read the names of the 523 American soldiers killed in Iraq up to that date.

I was never Undecided. I have been against Bush being in office since the beginning.. but I was too young to be taken seriously by anyone. I am 19 now, and awhile back registered to vote. I had intended to just vote and be done with it, but today looking through your forum (as I have been doing A LOT the last week) I decided that I wasn't just going to wait for Nov. 2nd. Not with this going on! I emailed my Rep, the FCC, Senator McCain, and some advertisers, and signed the petition. (also on the 8th, I used your media list to contact probably 25 media sources about my thoughts on the debate- that Kerry did an outstanding job and whooped Bushy)
Now, my thank you is for this... if I hadn't come across your forum and seen how many people were as passionate about all this as I like to think I am, or could be, I wouldn't have pulled myself together and started contacting people about these issues.

And not to sound completely naive, but how do I register as a Dem? When I registered to vote there wasn't any box to check or anything.

David Deniston Smith, 45, of the 800 block of Hillstead Drive in Timonium, who also is Sinclair's chief executive, was arrested in an undercover sting at Read and St. Paul streets, a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes, Baltimore police said yesterday.

Smith and Mary DiPaulo, 31, were charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act. Smith was held overnight at the Central Booking and Intake Center and released on personal recognizance at 2 p.m. yesterday. DiPaulo's bail status was not available.

Officials at WBFF-TV (Fox 45) and Sinclair, one of the fastest-growing broadcasting companies in the nation with 28 television and 34 radio stations, would not comment yesterday. The company had $126 million in sales in the first half of this year.

Police said undercover Officer Gary Bowman, on a prostitution detail, was talking to DiPaulo about 9: 15 p.m. in a car at St. Paul and Read streets. She left the undercover car after telling Bowman that ``she had just seen her regular date driving in the area,'' according to court documents.

Police said DiPaulo ran across the street to a 1992 Mercedes, registered to Sinclair, and got in on the passenger side. Police followed the car onto the Jones Falls Expressway, where they said they witnessed the two engage in oral sex while Smith drove north.

Police said they followed the car back to Read and St. Paul streets, where they arrested Smith and DiPaulo, who lives in the 700 block of Washington Blvd.

I just called Toyota to register my concern with them that since they are a major advertiser with the Sinclair Group, I will no longer purchase another Toyota. I told them that Toyota is large enough to have some clout and if they would do as Sylvan Learning Centers have done and pull their ads, it could have a big impact on Sinclair stations. The person I spoke with was very polite and apologetic and told me that they are taking these calls very seriously. The calls about the Sinclair Group are kept separate from other calls and are sent to upper management. If there are enough complaints, Toyota will have to take action. So, fellow Posters, I urge you to call and get your views about this on record with Toyota. Their toll free number is 800-331-4331.

I have found this information on the web and it should be helpful:

"I’ve worked in the media business for 30 years and I guarantee you that sales is what these local TV stations are all about. They don’t care about license renewal or overwhelming public outrage. They care about sales only, so only local advertisers can affect their decisions.
Here's how to have an impact on the local Sinclair stations:
first, watch the station and make a list of all of the local advertisers. 
Then, write to the sales manager -- not the general manager, but the sales manager -- and tell him that you're going to contact all of the local advertisers to register a protest about the station airing this program. 
Be specific -- mention the names of those local advertisers. Then, actually contact them (if you write or email, cc the sales manager).

These stations make most of their income (around 60%) from local advertisers and will NOT want to have that income threatened.This has worked numerous times."

I understand that Redbull advertises on some of the Sinclair Broadcasting networks.

In light of the recent decision by Sinclair to air a 45 minute partisan commercial-free attack on John Kerry I have joined with thousands of others to monitor all 62 of the Sinclair affiliates planning on airing this program next week.

If your advertising is monitored on these stations from now throughout the period until this partisan "documentary" is aired, Redbull and all of it's related products will become part of a list that will be slated for a lifetime ban by a network of many thousands via internet organization.

This is a dierect assault on our democracy by Sinclair, and if Redbull chooses to support them with advertising dollars then they are not neutral in this matter.

Keep in mind non-participation in the "documentary" itself is not good enough. We expect Redbull to show true neutrality by stepping away from this partisan force prior to the airing of the program.

Hopefully you can make the right choice in this matter.

204. Non-Owned Affliates Standing Up to Sinclair

The post above from the Tallahassee TV station is exactly the response we want. Channel 27 in Tallahassee is only programmed by Sinclair - not owned by them. They are making a public statement that they will not show programming that Sinclair tells them to show. Most of the "Sinclair affiliates" are not owned by Sinclair. We need to get the owners of those stations to realize that their investment is being put into jeopardy by Sinclair. Those stations should then be removed from the boycott list.

I have been lurking on this board for months, and just recently signed up for an account to post. I just got off the phone with Colgate Palmolive to talk to them about their advertising with Sinclair. The woman I spoke with was very friendly and knew about this issue. She stated that she received a similar call a couple of hours before mine (we can do better - more calls needed!) I explained that what Sinclair, a large corporation owning many TV stations, was doing was un-American. I explained it a bit for her and she seemed to understand better what this was all about. I asked her what their position was, but she said they were just collecting customer feedback before they make any statements.

One thing that she was very interested to hear was that other advertisers had already pulled their advertising from Sinclair. She wanted to know who - I told them that there was a report that Sylvan had pulled, but that I was going off of online reports and couldn't verify its accuracy. She thanked me and said that that was very important for them to know. I guess it might set a precedent for them. They may not want to be the first to back out, but they certainly don't want to be last! I suggest we mention this fact to other advertisers.

FINKSBURG, Md. -- A Carroll County mobile home park faces charges of discriminating against African-American applicants.

A resident tipped off a civil rights group that later conducted an undercover sting -- and the results led to a lawsuit, WBAL-TV 11 News reporter John Sherman reported.

An independent testing agency said it has confirmed that discrimination took place, and now they're taking the owner to court.

Baltimore Neighborhoods Inc. actively looks for housing discrimination.

"We got a complaint from someone in Todd Village in Carroll County," BNI representative Joseph Coffey said. "We did what we always do, we investigated the situation by testing the property."

As part of the test, two people -- as identical as possible except for race -- applied for space at the trailer home community, located on Md. Route 140.

"We conducted several tests during this past year and every test came up where there was blatant discrimination on the part of the part of the Todd Village personnel, which clearly discouraged African-Americans from living in the Todd Village," Coffey said.

So now, the lawsuit alleges violations of the 1968 Fair Housing Act.

Lowe's has a strict company policy specifying that its advertising is not to run in controversial programming. One of Sinclair Broadcasting affiliated companies is named Acrodyne Industries. They operate from Sinclair's headquarters and Sinclair is the primary owner.

There was a major class action lawsuit against Acrodyne alleging that the company deceived shareholders and overstated profits. It was settled by a cash settlement and allowing shareholders to buy 1.7 million shares at a really cheap price.

However, Sinclair has only filed an application seeking FCC authority to purchase the Baltimore station from Cunningham (nee Glencairn) which is controlled by Carolyn Smith, the mother of the Sinclair principals. As noted in an exhibit to the application, Sinclair cannot own the station under the Commission television local ownership rule but it would like the Commission to essentially forgo application of that rule and allow it to own the station any way, arguing that there is sufficient competition in the market. Sent this to WGME (Portland, ME) advertisers and the station manager. Shockingly, no replies yet. I was at least expecting the canned response from the station...

I'll be delivering written copies to local businesses on Friday. I encourage others to do the same - rather than some anonymous Internet user or a voice on the phone, it puts a human face on the issue.

I am writing because you are an advertiser with WGME-TV, an affiliate
of the Sinclair Broadcasting Group. As you might have heard SBGI has
ordered all of its affiliates, including WGME, to preempt their
primetime network programming to air a slanderous attack film about
Senator John Kerry under the banner of "news" programming. SBGI plans
to run this smear commercial-free in an attempt to shield itself from
advertisers like you who might not want your product associated with
this blindly partisan and illegal political attack. This
"documentary" would be broadcast less than two weeks before the
election.

However, this is not the first time SBGI has found itself embroiled in
controversy. In April the award-winning ABC news program Nightline
aired an episode entitled "The Fallen" which consisted of host Ted
Koppel reading the names of American soldiers who had died in Iraq
while their names appeared on screen. SBGI refused to allow its ABC
affiliates to broadcast the show. At the time SGBI said, "We do not
believe such political statements should be disguised as news
content," and labeled the show an attempt to "influence public
opinion." I have friends and neighbors serving in Iraq and find it
incredibly offensive that SBGI refuses to acknowledge the sacrifices
of American soldiers who died defending this country. Furthermore, in
the months following 9/11, SBGI ordered reporters at several
affiliates to read on-air messages "conveying full support," not for
the United States or our troops, but for President Bush himself. It
is also noteworthy that SBGI and its executives have donated over
$200,000 to the Republican Party.

But SBGI has already made that money back, with interest. On
September 28 Jadoo Inc. announced a lucrative government contract with
the Department of Defense. Jadoo is a wholly owned subsidiary of
SBGI. The company also stands to gain if the administration and
Congress relax the rules governing media consolidation. In short,
SBGI has a vested interest in the outcome of the election, and is
exploiting its license to use the public airwaves to spread false
accusations which will aid the candidate it is supporting in the
election.

You are an advertiser with WGME-TV and by extension with Sinclair
Broadcasting. Perhaps you were not aware of Sinclair's questionable
practices in the past. But you are now. You should also be aware
that in two recent interviews on CNN, Sinclair Vice President Mark
Hyman distinguished himself by comparing the American media to
"Holocaust deniers" and insinuated that insurgents in Iraq are
providing "in-kind contributions" to John Kerry. I would also make
you aware that continued advertising with WGME would be seen by
myself, and by others, as an endorsement of Sinclair's unethical and
illegal policies. Maybe you don't mind associating your brand, your
company and your reputation with such activity. If that is the case
continue advertising with WGME and Sinclair. I shall respond
accordingly by boycotting your business, and encouraging others to do
the same. If, however, you are as repulsed by the words and deeds of
Sinclair and its executives, I encourage you to sever your ties with
the company. I would advise you that there are other alternatives
within the Portland market, including WCSH-TV, which happens to have
significantly higher ratings than WGME, especially for its
early-morning and evening newscasts.

I got your company's name and contact information from a handful of
boycott sites on the Internet. Some local companies had already
pulled their advertising before this incident, and others are
responding to this event by removing their advertising now. If you
fall into either of these categories, please let me know and I will
pass the word so you are removed from any lists, and receive proper
credit with fellow boycotters for making a wise business decision.

Many consumers have written to share their views on this issue. Some have urged General Mills to use its influence as an advertiser to ensure that the media reports the news in an unbiased manner. Some have urged General Mills to continue advertising, and have threatened to withdraw support for our products if we alter our advertising plans. Passions run deep on both sides, particularly this close to an election.

Whenever possible, General Mills does strive to preview the programs on which our advertising appears. We do so to assure that we do not advertise on programs inconsistent with the family-oriented nature of our products. This works well with entertainment programs produced and available for advance screening, but pre-screening of news broadcasts is usually not possible.

Our view in this area is clear. We believe one of the fundamental elements of our society is the freedom of the press. Companies such as ours, in our view, should not attempt to influence, control or pre-empt the content of news through the leverage of advertising sponsorship. To do so would undermine that fundamental freedom.

From time to time, any one of us as viewers may consider a particular news story to be inaccurate or imbalanced. News organizations do err. Judgment is not always well applied. One major news organization recently acknowledged that errors were made in stories relating to the current presidential election. When such errors occur, certainly a price is paid in terms of reputation. But errors and questionable judgment are an acceptable price to pay, in our view, to assure the presence of a free and independent media in our society.

I'm contacting you to let you know of my strong object to the Sinclair Broadcast Group's plans to air a lengthy, unpaid anti-John Kerry broadcast in the final weeks of the presidential campaign. Since Best Buy advertises on Sinclair stations, I am now boycotting your business and encouraging everyone I know to do the same. It really pains me to take this course of action, because I think Best Buy is a great store. If these Sinclair stations are owned by Sinclair, I'm not sure how easy it is for them to make individual decisions about this.

However, Sinclair's stations are sort of franchises of national networks -- ABC, FOX, WB, etc... They're all different. Why don't we contact those main networks and tell them we don't think they should associate themselves with this scheme? Is there a way they might pressure Sinclair, or cut off Sinclair's use of their networks?

Does this make sense?

On edit: Is there a way to know which are *owned* by Sinclair and which are *programmed* by Sinclair? I see the Tallahassee station that pulled the propaganda isn't owned by Sinclair and thus had the option to do that easily...

grassrootsnation.com has created a tool with which you can supposedly email all of Sinclair's national and local advertisers. If you use that tool, be careful:

1. Write your own message. The default message contains a few typos.

2. If you get a message saying that your email could not be sent, trying again probably won't help. I ended up using the individual local lists at http://www.boycottsbg.com/advertisers/default.aspx.

3. Beware at least one hostile address. After trying to send emails to every advertiser at once, then successfully sending customized emails to advertisers in Wisconsin, I got back around 20 identical emails with the same subject line, "Political Spam is Also Illegal!" I don't know whether these resulted from one of my attempts to send to all, which might have gone out despite the error message, or from my messages to local advertisers.

After reading a post at johnkerry.com forum, ( http://forum.johnkerry.com/index.php?showtopic=95933&st=0&p=626415&#entry626415 ) someone posted Jadoo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. was awarded a large amount contract for services. After doing some research, to confirm this, I have found evidence that it is true, that the Bush Administration has funded the Sinclair Broadcast Group with a contract. While the contract (below) detail summary is brief, I am 100% certain, this contract pays for, or is in relation/connection one way or another to the airing of the documentary: Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal an Anti-Kerry film airing on Sinclair Broadcast networks. An addition to that, I found several documents which linked the Sinclair Broadcast Group, with the Bush Administration, after the Bush Administration paid Sinclair to air fake news broadcasts about the new Medicare prescription law. An excerpt below explains this further;

"SINCLAIR AIRS FAKE NEWS BROADCASTS PRODUCED BY BUSH ADMINISTRATION: In March, it was discovered that the Bush Administration was producing "television news stories, written and paid for by the government, which have the appearance of legitimate news segments delivered by independent reporters," and distributing them to local newscasts as a way of promoting administration policies - including its ill-conceived Medicare prescription drug law. The fact that Sinclair Broadcasting Co. has chosen on the eve of an election to air one-sided programming in the form of an anti-Kerry documentary in a blatant attempt to undermine the Democratic process in America reveals the flaws of having relaxed FCC rulings concerning "fairness" in broadcasting. You can be sure that when Sinclair's Broadcasting License comes up for renewal, many Americans will actively fight to prevent your company from polluting the public airways. On the other hand, since your stock has been declining so rapidly because of your programming decisions, it will be a toss-iup whether you will file for renewal of your license or bankruptcy first.

I will be supporting a boycott of all of your advertisers as well as filing complaints with the FCC over your actions. Already several of your major advertisers have expressed their personal regret and concern over your decision when I have contacted them. They have indicated that they have been inundated with calls.

Be assured that I and many others will be voting with our pocketbooks.

279. My letter to all of skinners links, it took some time but worth it!

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a Decorated Navy Veteran, 1978-1988 active duty. It occurs to me it has become popular sport to smear veterans that have distinguished themselves in times of valor. Who have also chosen to continue to serve our country as elected representatives of 'We the People". These tactics serve no one honorably; they only call into question the validity of the military awards system. It questions any vet who has ever earned an award, it makes people skeptical and places doubt in their minds. So when someone like me displays them, they have a subconscious reaction to ask me if they mean anything!

This tactic was used against the Honorable John McCain, a hero's hero, when he ran in the 2000 primaries. Stories surfaced about his loyalty while in Hanoi as a POW, that was an all time low in politics. Did anyone bother to talk about his history on board the USS Forestal, how he survived the biggest disaster on aboard an aircraft carrier in Naval History. He was then given the option to go home, but he chose to stay and serve. It was after that when he "intercepted a surface to air missile with his plane" and after surviving that was captured. As far as his time in Hanoi, very few people actually know what it is like in a Vietnamese POW camp and try to survive. No matter what happened in Hanoi, one thing is for sure; at least he chose to be there!

You can add Senator Max Cleland to that smear list, guess what, at least he was there. He was not flying the friendly skies of Texas or hiding behind some deferment, if he had been, then he would probably still have all of his limbs!

Now we see the trashing of John Kerry's honorable service in Vietnam, again, one thing is for sure, he was in Vietnam, and there by choice!

I see a reoccurring theme in all of this; maybe the US Congress needs to review their awards criteria, certainly decorations must be handed out like candy. I will keep that in mind when I look at my Naval Expeditionary Forces medal (Beirut "83") or my National Defense medal, Sea Service deployment ribbon, Naval Enlisted Aircrewman Wings or any of the other four worthless pieces junk that they gave me.

The Sinclair Broadcasting Group should be ashamed for allowing itself to be used in this disgusting tactic. This is no way for a public broadcast company to act and should withdraw the offer to run "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal". Not simply because they have opined that Kerry does not deserve these awards, but mainly because this is a purely political advertisement, and is being donated valuable airspace by The Sinclair Broadcasting Group.

Even to most novices on such matters, most would be of the opinion that there has to be FEC conflicts here. It is could easily be perceived as a campaign contribution to a political party, not to mention clearly a partisan advertisement.

I am one Vet who stands behind all Veterans that have received military awards, regardless of political party affiliations, that includes George Herbert Walker Bush for honorable service in WWII. This type of slander needs to stop, regardless of who is being attacked.

Please do not allow any further degradation to the military awards system, that’s all some of us have. We are not wealthy, we enjoy a humble existence, content with the knowledge that our value to America is not with material wealth, rather, it is in our distinguished service to our nation. The only thing that we have to show for this when we grow old, are our medals.

To someone who has never served or been in combat, this may seem trivial, however there are many vets like myself who feel that all our awards are being cheapened by these attacks. I beg you to stop these attacks on politicians who have SERVED our nation in combat.

I think it is all well and good that Sinclair is going to air A POW Story, Friday, October 22 on WGME 13, but is he still planning to air Stolen Honor? I feel by airing A POW Story it is too little, too late. It is very obvious that this is Sinclair's attempt to stop the hemorrhaging of companies who are pulling their ads and to stop the free fall of the Sinclair stock. The only way the Sinclair group can show any integrity is to not air Stolen Honor. The public knows it is not "news", but an illegal contribution to the Bush campaign.

I will continue to write letters to the editors of various newspapers, letters to the advertisers, and letters to the various television stations. This has been a foolish and damaging move on Sinclair's part. Just because he has the means and the format in which to proclaim his partisanship, this does not give him the right to try to sway the election. How stupid does he think we Americans are?

Robert Scheer: The 9/11 Secret in the CIA's Back Pocket The agency is withholding a damning report that points at senior officials.

It is shocking: The Bush administration is suppressing a CIA report on 9/11 until after the election, and this one names names. Although the report by the inspector general's office of the CIA was completed in June, it has not been made available to the congressional intelligence committees that mandated the study almost two years ago.

"It is infuriating that a report which shows that high-level people were not doing their jobs in a satisfactory manner before 9/11 is being suppressed," an intelligence official who has read the report told me, adding that "the report is potentially very embarrassing for the administration, because it makes it look like they weren't interested in terrorism before 9/11, or in holding people in the government responsible afterward."

When I asked about the report, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice), ranking Democratic member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she and committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.) sent a letter 14 days ago asking for it to be delivered. "We believe that the CIA has been told not to distribute the report," she said. "We are very concerned."

According to the intelligence official, who spoke to me on condition of anonymity, release of the report, which represents an exhaustive 17-month investigation by an 11-member team within the agency, has been "stalled." First by acting CIA Director John McLaughlin and now by Porter J. Goss, the former Republican House member (and chairman of the Intelligence Committee) who recently was appointed CIA chief by President Bush.

The official stressed that the report was more blunt and more specific than the earlier bipartisan reports produced by the Bush-appointed Sept. 11 commission and Congress.

"What all the other reports on 9/11 did not do is point the finger at individuals, and give the how and what of their responsibility. This report does that," said the intelligence official. "The report found very senior-level officials responsible."

By law, the only legitimate reason the CIA director has for holding back such a report is national security. Yet neither Goss nor McLaughlin has invoked national security as an explanation for not delivering the report to Congress.

"It surely does not involve issues of national security," said the intelligence official.

"The agency directorate is basically sitting on the report until after the election," the official continued. "No previous director of CIA has ever tried to stop the inspector general from releasing a report to the Congress, in this case a report requested by Congress."

None of this should surprise us given the Bush administration's great determination since 9/11 to resist any serious investigation into how the security of this nation was so easily breached. In Bush's much ballyhooed war on terror, ignorance has been bliss.

The president fought against the creation of the Sept. 11 commission, for example, agreeing only after enormous political pressure was applied by a grass-roots movement led by the families of those slain.

And then Bush refused to testify to the commission under oath, or on the record. Instead he deigned only to chat with the commission members, with Vice President Dick Cheney present, in a White House meeting in which commission members were not allowed to take notes. All in all, strange behavior for a man who seeks reelection to the top office in the land based on his handling of the so-called war on terror.

In September, the New York Times reported that several family members met with Goss privately to demand the release of the CIA inspector general's report. "Three thousand people were killed on 9/11, and no one has been held accountable," 9/11 widow Kristen Breitweiser told the paper.

The failure to furnish the report to Congress, said Harman, "fuels the perception that no one is being held accountable. It is unacceptable that we don't have ; it not only disrespects Congress but it disrespects the American people."

The stonewalling by the Bush administration and the failure of Congress to gain release of the report have, said the intelligence source, "led the management of the CIA to believe it can engage in a cover-up with impunity. Unless the public demands an accounting, the administration and CIA's leadership will have won and the nation will have lost."

In a press release, Sinclair said 40 of its 62 stations would air a one-hour program Friday evening entitled "A POW Story: Politics, Pressure, and the Media." The program will raise allegations about John Kerry's anti-war activites in the early 1970's. The Sinclair press release says, "we are endeavoring, as we do with all of our news coverage, to present both sides of the issue covered in an equal and impartial manner."

Let's cut through the spin: First, this is the same plan that was discussed at a company meeting on Sunday attended by Sinclair correspondent Jon Lieberman. After the meeting, Lieberman complained publicly that Sinclair was planning an hour of "political propaganda." (Lieberman was then fired.) Secondly, two sources at Sinclair confirm that while Stolen Honor will not air in it's entirety, the program will contain "large chunks" of the documentary. (See previous blogs for a rundown on the factual errors that permeate the entire film.) Thirdly, this "news coverage" on John Kerry's war activities from 35 years ago is the first "special" Sinclair has produced in this presidential campaign. There have been no "news specials" or "special programming" on Iraq, Al-Qaeda, 9-11, terrorism, taxes, health care, education... or anything else you can think of that the candidates have been asked to take a position on. Fourth, despite Sinclair's press release that it endeavors to "present both sides of the issue," the only documentary film maker who has been invited to participate is Carlton Sherwood of "Stolen Honor." (No other documentary film maker has been asked... and there are several who have done films about Kerry's anti war activities that are far more factually honest.) Furthermore, two sources inside Sinclair say the company is still planning to exclude any response from the Kerry campaign unless Senator Kerry himself appears on the program.

Filmmaker sues Sinclair in New York over anti-Kerry documentary

NEW YORK -- Filmmaker George Butler sued Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. on Thursday, saying its documentary showing a one-sided view of presidential candidate John Kerry's anti-war activities violates his copyrights by using pictures and film without permission.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, seeks unspecified damages and a halt to any use of the material Butler has created in the more than three decades he has documented Kerry's life.

Butler said in the lawsuit that Sinclair infringed upon his copyrights by the unauthorized reproduction of pictures and film for its documentary "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal."

The 42-minute Sinclair film consists largely of interviews with U.S. prisoners of the Vietnam War who survived torture in Hanoi and became enraged at Kerry and others for suggesting they had suffered for an unjust cause.

If he decides to post the link either in public, or in private, it is his choice.

Im sure that after I have been here awhile I will know the rules a little better and be able to make better judgement as to the content that I reveal.

I will say again that someone had to dig deep to find this many people that hate Kerry. Im sure if you dig deep enough on any person in this country, you could come up with an equally damaging film.

It seemed we made a difference or the piece wasn't such a shock or slanted because I knew it was coming. They presented two opinions.They gave too much credence to the Swift vets, but It wasn't the only voice heard. I think the DU'ers and Dem's and Free Press Advocates were served.
If we continue to speak out against the right wing I feel it will go back into the shadows and lose it's grip on the USA. Small victory. We must now win all wars(legal and illegal-Iraq). Now we must
get out the vote for our next Pres. JohnFKerry!

I agree, I think the piece was much more 2 sided. I think Sinclair would have just aired the documentary itself if there wasn't such an up roar. They showed clips from Stolen Honor and Going up River. The clip from Stolen never really has Kerry talking in context with moving footage. It just has a picture of him and text as he reads out the atrocities. Also, Going up River doesn't have that section when he talks about war atrocities. Is there footage on the web which shows Kerry's testimony in toto?

Also, I really disagree with the Vet's and Military family's opinion towards the end of the piece that protest during war time is unpatriotic. It is so right wing, it is boarding on dictatorshipish. It is an opinion that Saddam Hussein and Korea's dictator Kim would agree with.

George Butler could have spoken a bit better but he does better speaking through his film.
