My niece and nephew are both in the Navy. Nephew is a Seabee and is in Iraq. Niece is on a ship stationed at Norfolk. She just came for a visit and told me the general consensus on her ship is that bush has been bad for the military and most everyone she has talked to is voting K/E.
The funniest thing happened during her visit. She came to my office (I work with all RW religious nuts, southern baptists) and when I introduced her to this one older gentleman I told him she is in the Navy. Well, he proceeds to thank her for her service and then goes into a rant about some people do not respect our military personnel, namely a guy who is right now running for president. My niece (who is alot like her me, I'm happy to say) quickly said "Yes, I know, his name is George Bush".
He was taken back by her statement, but went on to say he was referring to Kerry and then started spewing the Swift Boat Vet crap and offered my niece some literature about what they had to say about JK. My niece politely said no thanks, "I know how they are trying to smear Kerry. I have read up on both candidates and I also know all about bush not even bothering to show up for his stint in the National Guard".
Once again this RW religious zealot is stopped dead in his tracks, but then begins to talk about bush being a xtian and that everything happening now is in the book of Revelations, and blah blah blah, and Armageddon is near. (I guess he felt if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.)
I'm not sure if he could tell, but she and I were doing our best not to laugh out loud. We alway try to respect our elders just as we respect other people's rights to express their views (no matter how crazy they are). He finally realized she wasn't persuadable and walked away.
This poor man, you could tell he really wanted to come down hard on my niece, but since she is in the military he had to show his respect.
After he left my niece said "Aunt cliberty, I don't know how you work here and tolerate these people on a daily basis." I told her that I just have to smile and let it go, since I know the truth. I know that God is not on their side, we are on God's side. And I also spend alot of time at DU!
