I have taken the day off and am helping here in Billings - for Schweitzer for Gov - but, also hope to help Kerry have strong showing.

VOLUNTEER - its all about GOTV now.

1. I already have

A Dem friend of mine who did it in 2000 convinced me to volunteer in 2002, even though our congressional candidate was obviously doomed. It was a great experience and I'm really looking forward to doing it again, with so much at stake.

2. Yep, trying to help

Did some phone calling rounding up local volunteers today. We'll soon start phone banking, canvassing and leafleting.

Just finished a terrific voter registration drive. Our local HQ got 2700 new voters in a highly dem. city in NE Ohio. Reports indicate that in Ohio fully 8% of all registered voters this year are new registrants.

On election day I'm taking the day off to perform any task asked of me to help GOTV and/or insure a Kerry victory and an uncontested legitimate result.

3. A question about registration drives: do they include apartment complexes?

I always hear door-to-door, especially this year, but in the decade+ I lived in an apartment in Las Vegas no registration worker ever came by, to my knowledge. Last week I asked 8 or 10 friends who live in apartments and all of them said the same thing.

On TV I specifically heard a registration worker in Ohio last week say they were going door-to-door in Democratic areas. I ask because I know there is a significant gap in voting tendencies between home owners and apartment dwellers. An untapped resource. In 2000 I think it was 65% of home residents voted to just 44% who lived in apartments.

5. I'm not sure

that there is a simple yes or no to that question. We did leafleting in housing projects but in private apartment buildings it is often impossible to get management to agree to non-residents roaming the halls. In those cases it falls on activist residents of the building to solicit their neighbors.

Next election if your still in an apartment building or complex perhaps you can be that resident activist.

I know that ACT was very active here doing door-to-door but I don't know if they had success in accessing apartment buildings.

7. Thanks, I thought that was the likely problem

I have a home now. But when I volunteer this year I'll ask the local Democratic officials regarding policies on canvassing apartment complexes. Even if the management doesn't allow door-to-door, maybe I could put up registration information on bulletin boards above mailboxes, etc.

4. Remember to vote absentee...

...if you're doing GOTV work on Election Day.

6. I'm not voting absentee, cuz I'm voting first thing in the morning, and

then working at my polling place.

I've been reading articles about how easy it is to tamper with absentee ballots. It just makes me nervous.
