Voter Triggers Dean's Much-Talked About Temper
"The former Vermont governor had just finished his standard stump speech blasting President Bush for, among other things, his Iraq policy and his stewardship of the economy. He asked, as is his custom, for "questions, comments or rude remarks in the New England tradition."

Ungerer, wearing a T-shirt bearing the words "Mr Fix It," rose to his feet and condemned what he called the incivility of the campaign and the political press. He suggested Dean and the other Democratic candidates stop "tearing down your neighbor" and cut their "slam, bam and bash Bush" rhetoric"

"Please tone down the garbage, the mean-mouthing of tearing down your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer, a registered Republican who voted for Bush in 2000, said to scattered hisses and boos from the overwhelmingly pro-Dean audience at the Oelwein Community Center.

Dean, whose rivals have suggested his impulsiveness, outspokenness and temperament make him less than ready for the White House but have been unable to provoke him in a dozen or more debates and forums, began by calmly replying: "George Bush is not my neighbor."

But when Ungerer stood and tried to interrupt, Dean shouted: "You sit down. You had your say. Now I'm going to have my say."

The crowd cheered and Ungerer sat."

This guy deserved what he got. He doesn't get to kick Dean as much as he wants and not let Dean respond.

84. Sorry as Dean supporter, this was not cool
You can't vent at voters and talk down to them by telling them to "sit down". Leave it at: "You've had your say, now I'll have mine." This is already going over the news wires and just reinforces Dean's image as vituperative. Dean can be coached on this and has to be, for the general.

66. This is exactly why I don't support Dean or Clark
I've seen both candidates blast out against dissenters. John Kerry has been interrupted several times on the campaign stump by Republicans and each time has answered in a calm demeanor.

This smackdown stuff is ridiculous. What happened to the teachings of Gandhi and MLK? The hypocrisy of anti-war Dean and Clark supporters is dissapointing.

We need a true diplomat in the White House. Kerry, Edwards, and Kucinich have the demeanor to lead ALL americans, not just supporters.

82. Last time I checked, Kerry was going along with Bush
Kerry voted for PATRIOT Act, at our civil liberties' expense, and then he decided to get along Bush, and believe in Bush, when he voted for Iraq War Resolution.

BTW, President Truman was never kind to Republicans, taking always a great deal of pleasure in kicking their butts and mocking them in public. Truman was a great President!

87. Exactly correct. Clinton was "cool" too, and Dean's "not my neighbor"
response was, for most of the religiously minded that he is supposedly courting- very un-Christian.

Clinton was famously cool headed when confronted so.

69. As a Clark supporter, I really wanted to read something bad here. Instead
This is nothing. Dean put the guy in his place. Good for him. If Dean bites the head off a bat (go ahead, make your little Dean bat-puns) or throws a kitten into a mosh pit, it'll be news. This is just a guy doing his job and running for president. And another guy doing his job and trying to support that current loser in the White House.

(That's a joke, BTW).
Nothing noteworthy here, except Faux is still a collection of shitpot-stirring media hooers. I'll just be glad when all the primaries are over and we can get down to the real business of kicking Bush's ass out of the White House.
John

70. Here's another account (AP) of what happened:
OELWEIN, Iowa -- Howard Dean rejected a voter's request to be more neighborly and stop "mean mouthing" President Bush, saying Sunday someone needs to stand up to the president.

Dale Ungerer, a retiree from Hawkeye, Iowa, lectured Dean for nearly three minutes near the end of a forum aimed at winning voters for Iowa's Jan. 19 caucuses.

Ungerer accused Dean and other Democratic presidential hopefuls of dividing the country by bashing Bush instead of outlining their own plans and showing respect for authority.

"Please tone down the garbage, the mean mouthing, the tearing down of your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer told the former Vermont governor and Democratic front-runner. "You should help your neighbor and not tear him down."

a guy like that go on for three full minutes?

They don't include that part on the Faux News tape, obviously. And speaking of the Faux News tape, has anyone heard of any other news network camera just happening to be around? Or was it just Faux News?

80. What a great story to wake-up to!
And I need to note something..
the unity in this thread is incredible!

I think it may be a reflection of what's to come. No, not necessarily in terms of who will be the nominee, but of how things will happen after the nominee is decided. Our nominee will be chosen, and many will be disappointed, no matter who it is. Then that nominee is going to be attacked by the Right and he'll fight back, and people are going to rally to his side. I'm seeing it how it's going to happen right here before my very eyes, and it feels great. Freepers like that are a great reminder that this is all about unseating the Chimp.

My favorite line of this week: "George W Bush is NOT my neighbor!"

I'm ecstatic over this story for some reason..

91. Influencing friends and distancing enemies
Since I have yet to make a choice of who I will support to unthrone the *, Mr. Dean's remarks, and more pointedly, his attitude, to the gentleman in question left me with more questions.
I thing he needs to wake up to the reality that a lot of conservatives, of both political persuasions, are sitting on a fence waiting for the rhetoric to move into a constructive debate between ideologies. The gentleman Mr. Dean so curtly dismissed, my personal call, actually had an important message for Mr. Dean and the rest of the pack. The majority of people in this country already know something is wrong. They are waiting for someone to offer solutions. Leave it to the bloggers, pundits, and other critics to bash the bush. I am ready to hear what Mr. Dean and the others have to offer that is going to move us in a more productive direction.

98. According to the AP account, Ungerer
went on three minutes, which is more than long enough. Mind you, the AP account was penned by Nedra Pickler, a reporter long noted for her conservative sympathies.

Ungerer used this three minutes to make unsupported, ad hominem attacks on Dean, essentially parroting Republican talking points, and throwing in a bit of irrelevant biblical rhetoric for good measure. Since he feels so strongly about negativity toward one's "neighbors," I expect him to show up at Mr. Bush's next fundraiser (I hope he can throw together a few thousand dollars in order to get in), and wag his finger at him for the grotesque character assasination of Al Gore in 2000.

In any event, even if Dean had the temperament of a saint, I'd expect him to lose patience with a rude, bloviating ditto head like Ungerer.

100. There is a similar story about Clark
At the Concord Town Hall meeting some guy lectured Clark for "10 minutes" about his plan for Iraq. We need a three state solution, yada, yada, yada. The audience was getting restless.

Clark listened to him, then gave him detailed reasoning about why he was wrong -- how his plan would lead to more ethnic violence. Clark listened to every word the guy said and provided a respectful answer, even as he disagreed with him.

Clark could correct him while leaving everyone feeling that the guy was being respected. There was no need to be "vociferous" about it.

Even though I'm a self avowed Clark supporter I don't like trafficking in this media hit on Dean. But I do think this is a problem for Dean and it is part of why I switched from Dean to Clark. Voters are going to be afraid that Howard Dean will get angry with them. They are going to be afraid that Howard Dean will judge him. This will make it harder for people to hear and accept Howard Dean's message.
