"All right. You've covered your ass, now."...Aug. 6, 2001, PDB
If this doesn't tell you anything then I give up!!!! I placed this first in GDP asking that the discussion not get out of control so that the post got sent to our little basement down here and more people could view this information at DU.

I am placing it here also to say that that this statement is very indicative to someone who knew what and who was coming down the flight-path of blame and disingenuous bullshit of hypocrisy of 911 statements of this government. Why would he say you got your ass covered if it involved a foreign attack on the United States?

Ron Suskind, George W. Bush and the Aug. 6, 2001, PDB

Ron Suskind's "The One Percent Doctrine" is out this week, and the Washington Post's Barton Gellman says it's full of "jaw-dropping stories" about the Bush administration's war on terror.

Or lack thereof.

We've known for years now that George W. Bush received a presidential daily briefing on Aug. 6, 2001, in which he was warned: "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." We've known for almost as long that Bush went fishing afterward.

What we didn't know is what happened in between the briefing and the fishing, and now Suskind is here to tell us. Bush listened to the briefing, Suskind says, then told the CIA briefer: "All right. You've covered your ass, now."

1. To me, it sounds like
someone totally incapable of understanding the threat Osama bin Laden posed to the US.

2. That statement still does not explain "cover your ass"
Why did he use that expression whereas other expressions could have dealt just as well with the staffer?

CYAF "Cover your Ass files" are known throughout bureaucratic nomenclature as a way to deal with things that might destroy you or the reputation of the department.

Also looking at the bushenfurher history of ie. national guard, drug arrests and nefarious career
I don't think that this saying was used as something just to throw out in the face of a staffer and witnesses as a casual idiom.
He has "covered his ass" or had it covered by others many, many times in his life and knew exactly what it meant and the seriousness of the statement.

4. I guess I wasn't clear enough.
It was the same kind of statement as Ashcroft's "I don't want to hear about this anymore."

It's a cynical in-your-face statement of contempt. Bush was completely convinced that such an attack would never happen, and he was sick of hearing about it from whoever was in his face about it. It's a suggestion that the Aug 6 PDB was only an exercise in ass-covering, and Bush was more than willing (at that moment) to take what fallout ensued from ignoring the warning.

6. Particularly in light of all of the other threat assesments and warnings
that he was getting. A very strange choice of words to end such a sobering and extreme briefing. Sure would be interesting to know his body english as he was saying it....

5. please.
You know you have no more reason to interpret this your way than your already pre-existing conclusion in favor of the official story. Viewed neutrally, it is not definitive either way, but more strongly suggests he's joking knowingly about how this is a process of general ass-covering in advance of the fore-known attack than your version that Bush is really thinking, "ha ha, CIA wants insurance against unlikely events, I don't care either way..."

Really, there is no reason to pretend it's definitive either way.

3. LIHOP anyone?
oh, and on PBS Frontline last night they mentioned that cheney had ordered two planes shot down on 911. (they then said he didn't, it was merely a 'mistaken impression') my take is they shot down both the plane over pennsylvania and the pentagon plane. there's a REASON they refuse to release the pentagon videos.

7. all the more reason to now believe that the PDB "did" in fact say,
"weeks many many dead, very very big uproar, possibly using hijacked commercial jets as suicide weapons to be crashed into skyscrapers in NYC, Washington DC. and Chicago" that paragraph was on page 2 the same day it was released to the public. My guess is the idiot didn't clear it with the Bush Crime Family and showed it all.
Later the PDB was scrubbed of that damaging paragraph.
The chimp ordered that report, it seems too funny that it would leave out the most crucial information (weeks). This PDB was ordered due to the rumors of arabs taking flight lessons in the southwest hence the "Phoenix Flight Memo's"
I usually run my VCR and tape whatever comes forward. That day in April 04' I wasn't taping. After seeing the PDB late in the afternoon I thought for sure it would be repeated on other news channels. But no, only the scrubbed version.
Then what about the meetings with Tenet after Moussouai was busted on Aug 15 2001? Tenet met with chimpy 3 times in Aug 2001 this after Tenet lie to the 911 Commission saying "I didn't meet with Chimpster cause I was in Maryland,he (chimp) was in Crawford"
Tenet meets with Chimp on Aug 18, Aug. 25 (at Crawford) and then again on Aug 31 2001 when the idiot king returned from Crawford after many weeks of vacation.
What did they discuss? Anything less than the spectacular attacks planned is dereliction of duty. Thanks to cooperative research for that label.
Its not National Security the Crime Family worries about. Its their asses they worry about. We are hot on their trail and will eventually bring them to justice.
