Why Is This In The 9/11 Commission Report Unless They Want To Insult Us?
This is the section where they talk about the FAA response to flight 93. The World Trade Center has been hit by two planes, the Pentagon was hit-- the US is facing an emergency of unimaginable proportions and...

From the Report:

At 9:49, 13 minutes after Cleveland Center had asked about getting military help, the Command Center suggested that someone at headquarters should decide whether to request military assistance:

FAA Headquarters: They're pulling Jeff away to go talk about United 93.

Command Center: Uh, do we want to think, uh, about scrambling aircraft?

FAA Headquarters: Oh, God, I don't know.

Command Center: Uh, that's a decision somebody's gonna have to make probably in the next ten minutes.

FAA Headquarters: Uh, ya know everybody just left the room.

My god, how fucking stupid is this? Are they trying to insult us with this? How fucking stupid are these people? This is just so mind-bogglingly lame I can't believe they would even want to put this in this report. It is simply insulting to this country.

 :grr: :nuke:

1. Are you suggesting this conversation didn't happen, or that its clear our
leaders are incompetant? or both?

2. No, I think it did happen. I just don't know why the commission
put it in there, unless they want to infuriate us or insult us or to embarrass the FAA and make them into the scapegoat (or all three).

That exchange is just so infuriating, you have to wonder WHY they decided to put it in the report.

The most important point is this-- it is NOT the FAA's fault that planes were not scrambled!!!!!!!!

They thought the only CT'ers would be old right-wing anti-commie types - easily marginalized. They never thought we would dare to buck the great patriotic outpouring after the attack.

Or some big FAA muckity- mucks promised to fall on their sword for them. Because if they were shown to be sorely lacking...what would happen? They would get a huge bail-out and lots more funding. And that is exactly what happened. I think there is some research into a big shake-up at the FAA befor or after the 2000 election and some true believer types were put into place.

Reminds me of what they tried to tell Sibel Edmonds, that if she and the rest of the translater went slow and sat on the documents then they would get more funds for a larger staff. All B-S.

Spooked, do you think that they are planning another war to happen soon? I think it is almost for sure because I always wondered why Rummy would not put twice as many troops into Iraq as he has. He must be keeping some a bay for just this plan - that crap he tries to
sell... "A leaner, meaner fast moving military machine that is able to fight in multiple theaters"

4. I agree they probably weren't counting on so many people doubting the
story-- and the internet has helped hugely.

I don't know if they are going to try another war-- Iran seems most likely. Iraq looks so bad right now I can't see any support for another war unless they pull off another major terror attack. But I don't think they are that desperate yet. I think you're right-- initially they used few troops for Iraq because they were saving some for Iran.

Remeber Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech? He said something along the lines of "we;ve won the battle of Iraq". They were thinking Iraq was just one battle in "the war on terror". My god how arrogant and naive they were. They still are, but they don't use that terminology anymore thank god..

5. I think it probably did happen, but
if this exchange did occur:

------------------------------
Command Center: Uh, do we want to think, uh, about scrambling aircraft?

FAA Headquarters: Oh, God, I don't know.

Command Center: Uh, that's a decision somebody's gonna have to make probably in the next ten minutes.

FAA Headquarters: Uh, ya know everybody just left the room.

------------------------------

has anyone involved been reprimanded in any way?

6. Are you kidding? They probably got promoted!
That's how it has seemed to work with the Bush administration. They either got promoted or got the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
