Salem Argiba, a resident of this village known as the "den of collaborators," pantomimes tying up a sack.
"If we are sent to Gaza they might as well save us the time and close the body bags, because we will be slaughtered," wails this 32-year-old father of three.
Controlled for 30 years by the IDF and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Dahaniya is a clump of concrete bungalows and plastic-covered lean-tos. Like other highly secure Israeli military sites, it appears on no maps, but is nevertheless slated to be razed on or near September 1. Its 450 or so residents, some of whom have been given Israeli IDs, still don't know where they will be sent when Israel pulls out from the Strip this summer.
But they do know, says Argiba, who holds a Palestinian ID,
that relocation to territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority would mean financial destitution and maybe death. Throughout a two-hour interview with Argiba and two friends, he alternately cinches and zips imaginary body-bags to drive his point home.
He and 34 other families intend to petition the High Court of Justice to move them en masse somewhere in Israel. But should that fail, Argiba desperately vows his willingness "to pay the government $20,000 just not to send us to the Palestinian side."
