Israelis celebrated the state's 57th year of independence Thursday, flocking to parks and beaches as ceremonies marked the day more formally.

Speaking at a ceremony honoring outstanding soldiers at the President's Residence in Jerusalem on Thursday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said he has made up his mind to lead Israel towards change.

"It will be good to have people working on this task who have seen Israel at its glorious moments" the prime minister added.
