Syrian FM offers complete calm for Israeli retreat
By Nathan Guttman and Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondents, and Reuters
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Shara invited Israel on Sunday to renew contact with Damascus, and said he hoped Israel would take up the offer.

Speaking during an interview with CNN, Shara said an opportunity for peace exists, and spelled out the formula: complete calm on the part of Syria in exchange for a complete Israeli retreat, presumably from the Golan Heights.

The minister also congratulated Israel and the Palestinian Authority on renewing ties. He added that Syria would like to see progress made in other channels as well, in order to bring about comprehensive peace in the area.

PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas is doing a good job, Shara said.

1. My 2 cents...
DO IT...

BUT only for a complete peace treaty, normal relations with full exchange of ambassodors, trade etc..withdrawell from Lebanon and rendering Hezbollah impotent toothless and peaceful towards Israel...

None of this complete calm nonsense.....

3. thats the problem....
a promise of ``complete calm `` means nothing....especially from a dictatorship...my gut feeling is that its just mischief....

8. Is this some sort of tacit admission that
Syria's responsible for "incomplete calm" elsewhere (um ... hmmm ... so, where would that be? And, uh, how "incomplete"?)

But ... but ... I thought they weren't really behind Hizbullah or other "activist" organizations.
