France urges Israel to grant Arafat free movement
French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier Sunday urged Israel to restore Palestinian Authority chairman Yaser Arafat's freedom of movement once he is treated, saying it "was not dignified" to keep the Palestinian leader under siege in Ramallah.

France, thrust back into the fray of Middle East politics by its decision to treat Arafat, said Sunday that Europe, the United States and Arab governments must work in coming weeks to restart the Israel-Palestinian peace process.

Before he was rushed Friday for treatment in Paris, Arafat had been a virtual prisoner in his West Bank compound for nearly three years, kept there by Israeli threats, sieges and his own fears of being banished forever.

Barnier, speaking on France-Inter radio, welcomed Israeli assurances that Arafat will be allowed back if he recovers.

Yasser Arafat is the legitimate head of the Palestinian Authority, of the Palestinian people," said Barnier. "It is totally normal that he is being examined in our country and we welcome him."

1. France’s everlasting love for the PLO
In a deliberate snub, French Foreign Minister Barnier decided to visit Palestinian Authority head Yasser Arafat, rather than Israeli Prime Minister Sharon, on his visit to the region. We revealed this intention to readers earlier. Now we have an account of the actual meeting with the Nobel Prize-winning terror master.

Mr Barnier explained that it was important for France to reaffirm strongly the indispensable role of Chairman Arafat in that region of the world. He brought a message of sincere friendship and high esteem from President Chirac to Arafat. He also conveyed a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people in these very difficult times, mainly caused by the Israelis. “These are not only words but also concrete actions such as the cooperation agreement between France and the PA.”

Then he went on to deliver a “message of truth” to Arafat telling him: “Time is of the essence and if nothing is done, France will soon be all alone as the only country supporting you.”

Barnier also complained bitterly about the fate reserved to Arafat by Israel. For him, it is a disgrace for Arafat, for his rank as the legitimately elected President, and for his people. He demanded that Arafat’s isolation in his Headquarters be terminated.

2. And my all time favorite about the French ........
"This tenderness toward a mass murderer is repulsive and disgusting. But this is what we can we expect from a country whose Ambassador to England called Israel "that little shi..y country" or whose new Ambassador to Israel calls Sharon a "rogue." Last year, this same individual attending a dinner in Israel decided that appetite was more important than compassion. While one of the speakers described the blowing-up of his daughter in the Sbarro bombing in Jerusalem, the French representative went on enjoying his meal. After being strongly advised to pause for a moment like everybody else did, the French Ambassador declined. This brutal snub is not an exception, because in the case of a few families of French Jews killed in terrorist attacks in Israel, French officials have never presented their condolences. Obviously, France does not care much for Jewish lives lost, whether French or not. But saving their killers, YES."
