"In the heaviest fighting in the Gaza Strip in two years, Israeli troops poured into Gaza yesterday and killed at least 28 Palestinians, many of them civilians, while Palestinian gunmen shot dead two Israeli soldiers and a Jewish settler who was taking her morning run.
Most of the Palestinians were killed in northern Gaza, where soldiers, backed by tanks and helicopters, swept through Palestinian towns and refugee camps in a major incursion that the government said was aimed at thwarting more rocket attacks on nearby Israeli communities like the one that killed two Israeli toddlers Wednesday.
News reports said more than 100 Palestinians were wounded in the Gaza fighting, including 12 in critical condition.
Security officials said the operation would probably be broader and more sustained than any that Israel has carried out in Gaza, a sign of Israeli anger at the deadly attack with homemade Qassam rockets against the town of Sderot. They did not rule out the possibility that troops would carve out a buffer zone in the area and remain there indefinitely."
