Evil empire
Evil empire: The ongoing carnage has made it easier for the Americans and Israelis to commit more crimes against the Palestinians and Iraqis than anytime before. No one is being called to account. No one is keeping count. http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2004/708/op4.htm

People awake in the morning to the news of dozens dying in US bombings of Fallujah and Najaf. People sleep at night to the news that Israeli tanks stormed Palestinian areas, killing many or a few. People wake up again and go to bed again, exposed all the while to horrific reports of abduction and slaughter, of civilians having their throats cut for no fault of their own. Videotapes available in Baghdad now show the tragic fate of one Abdel-Al, an Egyptian driver who was tried, had his tongue severed, then his head. His judges prance in front of the camera. Five masked men stand under Islamic slogans -- a scene that can only bring terror to the hearts, along with hatred for Muslims and Islam.

Then we hear of the hundreds of mutilated bodies found in the aftermath of Moqtada Al-Sadr's showdown with the Americans. We have no idea why these people were tortured or killed. We have no idea who they were. Perhaps they were Al-Sadr's followers who rebelled against him. Perhaps not. They could be anyone.

People go to sleep and wake up again, to be shocked again, to be terrified again by the news of French hostages, of Nepalese victims, of two Italian women abducted for no apparent reason. The media, satellite networks and newspapers, have a field day with it all, playing up the drama for what it's worth. (cut)

There is a curse of evil and bloodshed looming over the region, a cloud of darkness that attracts vampires from all over the world, that seduces butchers who want their share of the macabre. Hundreds of people have become numb to the news of killings. Hundreds take part in the cold-blooded acts of murder. The ongoing carnage has made it easier for the Americans and Israelis to commit more crimes against the Palestinians and Iraqis than anytime before. No one is being called to account. No one is keeping count.

Waves of evil and aggression are sweeping the region, from every imaginable direction, drowning all semblance of legitimacy, religion, and morality. Humanity has taken leave of its senses in a situation where one murder follows another, one carnage leads into the next.

It is pointless to try and summon the principles of reason, religion, and international resolutions. It is pointless to urge reason or invoke faith. How can one advise rationality when irrationality is reciprocated by both side? How can one talk reason into one group of people when the other has taken leave of its senses? How can one condemn one type of horror when the world is oblivious to the atrocities that triggered it.

An empire of evil is taking root in our midst, courtesy of Bush's policies. And this is just the beginning.
