The Israel Defense Forces said it was behind an explosion in a house in Gaza City early Wednesday that killed five people.
Hospital officials said another seven people were wounded, four critically. Palestinians said the house is in the Sajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City, a stronghold of Islamic militants, and belonged to Hamas activist Ahmed Jabari.
The five casualties were Jabari's son, his brother, his son-in-law, his cousin and a relative of Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, the former Hamas leader who was killed in an IDF missile attack in April.
"In an Israeli security forces operation in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israel Defence Forces targeted a senior Hamas terrorist," an IDF spokeswoman said, without giving further details. Doctors said the apparent target, Ahmed Jabari, suffered leg wounds.
