Jordanian court convicts 15 militants of terror conspiracy

A military court convicted 15 men on Wednesday - only one of whom was in custody - for a terror conspiracy targeting unspecified Israeli and American interests in Jordan as well as Jordanian intelligence officials.

The court said it found Ahmad Mahmoud Saleh al-Riyati, 34, to be the mastermind of the 15-member terror cell linked to Al-Qaida and Ansar al-Islam militant groups. Al-Riyati, the only suspect in custody, was sentenced to 15 years in jail, but the sentence was quickly commuted to 7 years.

"Oh man, all these charges were false," al-Riyati shouted at the military judge in charge, Col. Fawaz Buqour, after the verdict and sentencing.

"Allah is my savior and guardian," said the bearded al-Riyati, walking inside the dock gazing at the ceiling and angrily waving his arms as policemen watched. His feet were chained together.

Eight of the other 14 - 12 of them Jordanians and two Iraqis - received sentences of 15 years in jail with hard labor.
