Settlers returning to Gaza in hope of compensation

Veteran residents forced to leave homes as landlords hope to cash in on evacuation compensation.

"A new phenomenon is sweeping through Gush Katif communities in recent weeks. Dozens of families who left their homes years ago and rented them out are returning to the Gaza Strip, at the expense of the temporary residents who are forced to leave their houses.

As the disengagement plan becomes more tangible, the option of compensation appears to increasingly attract the settlers. But in order to receive them, they must live in Gush Katif, so they can be evacuated from there eventually."

"The new phenomenon is arousing great anger among veteran residents in Gush Katif. Yigal Kirchenzeft, one of the founders of Neve Dekalim, clarified that residents will not welcome their old-new neighbors. "We are talking about people who left Gush Katif because of the security situation", he explained. "We are not angry at those who chose to leave but it's very irritating that some people are coming back just for the money, particularly after the overwhelming majority of residents in the area signed a petition saying they are not interested in compensation."
