Increased interest in left-wing rally in the wake of Gaza attack
http://www.maarivenglish.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=article&articleID=7244

<snip>

"The devastating attack in Gaza has increased interest in the pro-disengagement rally being organized by left-wing parties for Saturday evening. The evening’s slogan will be,”The majority decides: leave Gaza and start to talk”.

A growing number of supporters and activists called the organizers’ headquarters yesterday to express their support and intention to participate. The list of speakers is in the works but featured speakers will be opposition leader and Labor Chairman MK Simon Peres, Yahad Chairman Yossi Beilin, MK Amir Peretz (One Nation) and author Amos Oz. Organizers are also expecting that some settlers will deliver speeches as well."

1. Israel is a democracy
Still a young country, however, and is much less formalized and rigid than the US variety.

2. Peace Now rejects calls to cancel Saturday peace protest
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/427348.html

<snip>

"In response to a call from the settlers' Yesha Council to cancel a peace demonstration planned for Saturday evening, Peace Now Director Yariv Oppenheimer said Thursday the "demonstration is intended to save lives, and it therefore must be held at the time it was scheduled."

The demonstration, set for Tel Aviv's Rabin Square, will be restrained in character and will open with a minute of silence in memory of the 11 Israel Defense Forces soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oppenheimer said."

<snip>

"Labor Party Chairman MK Shimon Peres rejected the Yesha Council's call to cancel the demonstration and said the event's purpose is to save additional lives. The cynical attempt by the right wing to force its position upon the majority of the nation is shameful, Peres said."
