"The Teheran Times published a report claiming that five Mossad agents were arrested in Syria on suspicion of plotting to kill the head of the Hamas’ political bureau, Khaled Mashaal, and Musa Abu Marzuk, another high-ranking member of the bureau.
According to the report, five Yemenite Jews planned to meet with the two leaders in Yarmook camp in Damascus, where a ceremony was being held in memory of Hamas leader Abed al-Aziz Rantisi, whom Israel killed in Gaza. Reportedly, Mashaal's bodyguards arrested the agents and turned them over to Syrian authorities. During questioning the five supposedly admitted that they had entered Syria through Jordan and were planning to assassinate the Hamas leaders.
Syrian authorities haven’t yet confirmed the report.
In September 1997, two Mossad agents, carrying Canadian passport, unsuccessfully tried to kill Mashaal in Amman, Jordan by lethal injection. Under heavy pressure from Jordan’s King Hussein, Israel was forced to send an antidote and Mashaal's life was saved. The agents involved were released from prison in return for the release of former Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin."
