Straw Condemns Israel's 'Unlawful Killing'

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw today condemned the killing of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin as “unacceptable, unjust” and unlikely to benefit Israel.

The spiritual head of the Palestinian militant group Hamas was targeted in an Israeli air strike while returning from a mosque in Gaza City at daybreak.

Mr Straw, arriving in Brussels for EU talks on counter-terrorism, said the attack was nothing more than an “unlawful killing”.

I remember reading about how Sheik Yassin was released from an Israeli prison in '97. What I recall, with my old brain on my first cup of coffee is this: Israeli agents made a botched assasination attempt on someone after sneaking into Jordan. They walked up to this guy (I can't remember who it was) and injected Versed into his neck vien. The guy collapsed, and the Israeli agents were chased down and caught, they didn't expect this guy to have bodyguards. Anyway, the King of Jordan was very upset and demanded the antidote for the "poison" before the guy died (no time for toxicology results). The Israelis wouldn't talk. Meanwhile the guy was dying. King Hussien of Jordan then made an appeal to Bill Clinton, who then called Israel personally, and in essence said "give them the freakin' antidote". They did, which was Narcan, and the guy survived. However, this was now a diplomatic fiasco. Israel and Jordan were supposed to be allies, and it was very embarrassing for all involved.
As a result of this botched attack, Jordan requested and was granted the release of Shiek Yassin from prison. This was to appease his very angry population. The original wire story may still be around, it didn't make major news at the time. No one used to pay any attention to what happened in the Middle East back then.
OK I need more coffee now, just wanted to share that story.

5. Life sentence

That's how Yassin got released from his life sentence for killing four Palestinians as collaborators. It was the second release for Yassin. He was also jailed in 1984 for weapon violations and leading a hostile organization.
