Qurei warns against escalating violence

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei has lashed out at the United States in particular and the international community in general for not doing enough to achieve peace.

Interviewed by the BBC on Tuesday, he warned that Washington would face a "real problem" if it did not intervene immediately to stop the violence, and he called on Israel to agree to a mutual ceasefire and resume peace talks.

If the United States wanted to end the conflict, he said, it had to become more involved, noting: "They are not giving the attention we want because the situation is deteriorating day by day."

The US, he continued, must "put the roadmap in front of the parties to be implemented and to be respected and to bring the peace process back on track. They know how to do it if they want."

Qurei, who has declined to meet Prime Minister Ariel Sharon since taking office four months ago, said he did not object to meeting Sharon, but such a meeting had to succeed. Failure, he said, would be "catastrophic."
