Iran warns Israel against attacking its facilities
Iran's defense minister said Israel does not dare attack Iran but warned Saturday that any such military offensive would be met with a harsh response.

"I completely rule out that Israel would dare direct any military strike at any Iranian facilities," Ali Shamkhani said.

"But if Israel one day commits such military folly against Iran, I can promise you that (Prime Minister) Ariel Sharon, assuming he stays alive, will appear on television screens and announce that he regrets this folly. ... He will suffer and scream out in pain," Shamkhani said.

Shamkhani was speaking to reporters at the end of his two-day official visit to Lebanon.

==========================================

Amusing. Israel will strike if and when she finds it necessary. Iran could not mount a response worth considering, and any retribution against the Jewish state would be crushed by little Israel, and America if need be.

Iran is a potential target in America's war on terror. Shamkhani would do well to imagine himself displayed a homeless vagrant as Saddam was. Perhaps he would rate as the King of Hearts?

4. Iran will rule out a nuclear response
even if capable of it. The result would be nuclear holocaust on Iranians.

8. For such a "little" country, Israel seems constantly on the verge of crush
ing someone else. Or shooting their 15 year-old children in the back. Maybe they don't need America's help after all. And what is with the constant fantasies of this person or that person being displayed as a homeless vagrant ? Why do you post this stuff on a progressive bulletin board ? Tell me how any of this advances progressive causes - I'd really like to know.

11. Fighting terror is progressive
And monsters such as Saddam displayed in such a way is gratifying to many of us.

10. More posturing.
On both sides.

HEY, ISRAEL! Don't attack Iran. It wouldn't be right.
HEY, IRAN! Don't attack Israel. That wouldn't be right either.

I just wish everyone would leave everyone else alone already. Iran isn't a threat to Israel. Israel shouldn't be a threat to Iran. And all this 'I'll kick your ass' stuff is just encouraging them to try it.

Barbarians, the lot of them.

15. Indeed.
Aggression is a sign of weakness.
Either attacking the other would be an extremely stupid move,
and this is a really stupid statement, more like scared
yammering than anything reasoned out;
but if push comes to shove I would bet that it would be Iran
and not Israel that still has some few hectares that are not
smouldering rubble when it is all over, unless Uncle Sugar were
to bring his "strategic deterrent" to bear, and I don't think Uncle
Sugar will do that for Israel unless Russia gives him a pass first,
and I don't think Russia will give him a pass.

Iran has had the independent capability to enrich uranium for
some time, and the knowhow to make a fission nuke, and has missiles
with the range. Do you want to bet that they have not taken the
trouble to make a few "purely for scientific reasons"?

16. Never mind the nukes...
Iran may not have them, and won't risk retaliation from the US...
Isreal won't use them except to stave off total defeat.

BUT...

I think Iran is worried about a air strike like the Osirak raid on Iraq back in the early 1980's, where Isreal hit the Iraqi reactor that was allegedly manufacturing material for a nuclear weapon. I think what Iran is saying here that if Isreal were to try something like that, that Iran will strike back in a similar fashion.

17. A messy business, but I mostly agree.
The point is that there appears to be credible deterrent
capability on both sides. Russia is behind Bushehr (most
ironic name, eh?) and would not be happy if it was hurt, and
little Israel is negotiating for oil with big Russia as we
speak. I just don't think Osirak is going to happen again.
My guess would be, on thinking about it, that this is scare
tactics for the home crowd more than anything, and given the
state of Iranian politics right now that makes a good deal of
sense.
