Government officials decided after an earthquake Wednesday to begin looking into the stability of the country's infrastructure and security compounds in the coming weeks.
Housing and Construction Minister Effi Eitam convened the meeting, in which representatives from the National Infrastructure Ministry, Interior Ministry, police, Home Front Command and various rescue forces participated. They decided to accelerate the evacuation of old buildings that do not meet security standards.

The earthquake, which measured 5 on the Richter scale and occured at 10:20 A.M., sparked panic in many areas, but caused no injuries and only limited damage when it hit Israel and some of its Middle East neighbors.
According to the Association of Engineers, Architects, and Graduates of the Technological Sciences, there are tens of thousands of buildings in Israel, some 80 percent of those constructed before 1990, are not protected against serious earthquakes.
