Court Hearing Case Over West Bank Barrier
Court Hearing Case Over West Bank Barrier

JERUSALEM - The Supreme Court heard petitions from two Israeli human rights groups against the West Bank separation barrier Monday, a day after the government said it would change the route to minimize hardship for Palestinians.

The rights groups argue that any construction on occupied land is illegal and that the barrier violates human rights by disrupting lives of thousands of Palestinians.

"We accept the right of the state to surround itself with barbed wire if it wishes but only on its own territory," Michael Sfarad, a layer for the Center for the Defense of the Individual, said ahead of the hearing.

Israel insists that the barrier is necessary to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers, who have killed hundreds during three years of violence. Palestinians say it is a land grab aimed at preventing them from creating a state.

1. Perhaps the court will intervene.
I recall the court banning certain torture practices--I'm sure some will otherwise characterize these practices. I wonder if the court would rule that the wall can only be on Israel proper. I doubt it very much. More likely, they would order that certain movement restrictions be eased while allowing the wall.

2. The court has no jurisdiction
They are butting into internal self defense measures and must be ignored.

4. Does this also apply to the "coercive" practices ruling?
Was their ruling on interrogations pertinent? Or in Israel can the courts not interpret the law with regard to any law enforcement or security issue?

8. International law remains a theory
Not a practice. It is neither fairly, nor fairly applied.

5. Reading the article would help answer that question
Since this is the Israeli Supreme Court.
