Four Shin Bet Counterintelligence Leaders Revile Sharon

With the Palestinian intifada entering its fourth year, four former leaders of Shin Bet, Israel’s top domestic security and intelligence agency, have joined in criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the “butcher of Beirut.” These top intelligence agency chiefs from different eras all have deplored the way Israel is losing the battle for peace.

The four Shin Bet heads—representing both Israel’s Labor and current ruling Likud parties—posed for a photograph together, then gave their own versions of why, every day he remains in office, Sharon is making a bad situation worse. Former Shin Bet chiefs Avraham Shalom, Yaakov Perry, Carmi Gillon and Ami Ayalon made their Nov. 14 statements to Yediot Aharonot, Israel’s largest-circulation Hebrew-language daily newspaper.

What has happened to the chief-of-staff, Lt. Gen. Moshe (“Bogie”) Ya’alon?

Until recently, he was the most aggressive hawk in the army, perhaps in the whole country. Suddenly he is almost turning into a dove.

Has he had a divine revelation like Rabbi Saul of Tarsus, who went to Damascus to persecute the Christians and arrived there as an apostle of Jesus?

Up to now, Ya’alon’s gospel was far from the teachings of the gentle Jewish preacher from Nazareth. His doctrine was: Hit the Arabs on the head and they will give in. If that isn’t enough, hit them harder. Make the life of every single Palestinian unbearable, prevent him from leaving his village or town, destroy the livelihood of his family, take his land away.
