Chezi Goldberg Remembered For Devotion To Israel, Young People
Riding together recently on a Jerusalem bus, Devora Goldberg, 19, asked her uncle whether or not being on buses in Israel frightened him.

Outside of his home, where relatives and friends gathered to sit shiva for the 42-year-old Yechezkel (Chezi) Goldberg, one of 11 people killed in last Thursday’s bus bombing, she repeated his answer: “Life must go on. We have to live and we have to give them the message that we will continue living here as proud Jews.”

In the mid-1990’s, the Canadian-born Goldberg and his wife immigrated to Israel from Flatbush with their children, determined to make their lives here.

“To him, moving to Israel was the be-all and the end-all, saying things like ‘G-d did not take us out of Egypt to live in Toronto,’ ” recalled Goldberg’s long-time friend, Joe Halpert, who immigrated from Toronto around the same time.

Goldberg, a father of seven, was commuting by bus to his Jerusalem office, where he counseled at-risk teenagers and their families, when he was killed by the massive bomb set off by the suicide bomber, a Palestinian Authority policeman from Bethlehem.

We must remember, Israelis killed in this conflict are poeple, not mere numbers.

1. The most interesting part of this article is your comment after it...
QUOTE "We must remember, Israelis killed in this conflict are poeple, not mere numbers."

It is so true. I think we lose sight of that in any conflict...

We hear about dead soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan and they are just numbers to most of us...

These are real people that are dying... They are dying every day...

It's important that we (as progressives) keep the pressure on our government to treat the dead as real people and not just as numbers. Pressure the president to go to Dover and meet some of the returning caskets, force Mr. Sharon to go to the site of suicide bombings and see firsthand the carnage that his policies cause. Force Mr. Arafat to go to the site of those same bombings with members of the bombers families so he can explain to them why their family member had to blow themselves up...

It isn't easy in this day and age to influence our "leaders", but we must try...
