Israeli security agents broke up a Hamas cell
that was gathering information for a possible
assassination attempt on Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon, the government said.

The cell was uncovered with the arrest in
mid-June of two Palestinians from
Jerusalem who allegedly drove suicide
bombers into the city in May and June to
carry out attacks that killed 24, the
government said in a statement Monday.

Both drivers had Jerusalem ID cards,
allowing them freedom of movement around
the country and into and out of the West
Bank, the statement said.

On June 21, a week after the arrests, Israeli
soldiers killed the cell's leader, Abdullah
Kawasme, in the West Bank town of Hebron
