Arrest warning prompts retired Israeli general to cut short London visit
Danny Rothchield, who coordinated IDF operations in the early 90s, cancels scheduled events and returns to Israel a day after former Labour leader Amir Peretz leaves after similar warnings.

<snip>

"Retired Israeli Maj.Gen. Danny Rothschild was forced to cut short a scheduled visit to London this week, and cancel two planned lectures there, after the Israeli embassy warned him he was in danger of being arrested if he stayed in the country.

This comes a day after Knesset member and former Labour leader Amir Peretz was also forced to cut short a London visit, for the same reason.

Rothschild, who coordinated IDF operations in the Palestinian territories in the early 1990s during the first Intifada, entered the UK without any problems earlier this week and on Monday gave a lecture to a large crowd at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in Whitehall.

He was due to give a speech in parliament on Tuesday, organized by the Henry Jackson Society, as well as to appear before another think tank – but pulled out of both events, and instead hurried out of the country, taking the Eurostar to France -- so as to avoid passport control at Heathrow-- and flying home Tuesday night."

IDF officers to hide their identity for fear of arrests abroad

<snip>

"The IDF is increasingly worried about the possibility of being prosecuted abroad for war crimes: Maariv published an article this morning, saying senior officers will have their identities hidden, noting specifically this was not due to ‘field security’ reasons, i.e. fear that the officers will become targets for assassination, but rather for legal reasons. A senior officer told Maariv this is done in order to “protect the officers from the legal point of view.”

Borrowing a longstanding Air Force tradition, soon Israeli media will be barred from naming all officers from the rank of Sgan Aluf (Lt. Col) and upwards, and will have to make do with an initial. The officers’ faces will, as is customary in the Air Force,be blurred or pixilated, to prevent their identification.

In recent years, attempts have been made to arrest senior IDF officers: Shaul Mofaz, former Chief of Staff, had to leave London in a hurry; Tat Aluf (Brigadier General) Aviv Kokhavi cancelled his studies there, for fear of arrest; Doron Almog, former commanding general, Southern Command, found a warrant for his arrest waiting for him when he landed in London. At the advice of the embassy, he declined to leave his plane. There have been reports that former Chief of Staff Moshe “Boogie” Ya’alon had to leave New Zealand in a hurry for precisely this reason. Ya’alon denied those reports."

2. Good. If that's what it takes to rein in the IDF, that's what should be done. (NT)

4. Maybe since most Israelis serve in the IDF, they should all be arrested and jailed.

8. At the level of the enlisted grunts, the "I was only following orders" defense...
...can actually apply.

The War Crimes trials can start at the top long before
we need to prosecute some privates.

9. Not true
Nuremberg defense is not allowed at any level. At a practical level one can not arrest and try all of the grunts.

10. It's awfully hard to get a conviction if the soldier's alternative was, say, being shot...

...for disobeying orders. It's a lot easier to get
convictions of the commanders.

So the original hyperbolic protest ("Maybe since
most Israelis serve in the IDF, they should all be
arrested and jailed.
") is moot anyway; thanks.

5. Good, the time has come for there to be consequences for crimes against humanity.
Hopefully this will also come to affect our own criminals, like Dubya and Cheney.

6. No fan of either Danny Rothschild or the Henry Jackson Society..
but justice begins at home. Which former Labour leader is responsible for more war and killing: Tony Blair or Amir Peretz? Answers on a postcard please. Yup, it's not even close. When Blair can't come back to Britain for fear of being arrested, THEN we can start considering going after Israeli politicians.
