Netanyahu: A democratic Egypt won't threaten peace with Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that if democracy prevails in Egypt then it will not pose a threat to peace with Israel.

"All those who value freedom are inspired by the calls for democratic reforms in Egypt," Netanyahu said during a speech to the Knesset. "An Egypt that will adopt these reforms will be a source of hope for the world. As much as the foundations for democracy are stronger, the foundations for peace are stronger."

1. Ahh, the backlash must have had a bit of effect....
Hopefully someone pointed out his grotesque hypocrisy. Whatever, I credit him for finally saying something positive on the situation. Credit where credit is due.

2. Yes - credit due
for a sensible statement unlike some less intelligent statements from other countries this week.

3. Glad Israel finally came out in favour of democracy. Their silence was deafening.

4. The $69,000,000 question is
what will Netanyahu consider a 'Democratic' Egypt? Will it be considered 'Democratic' if in elections the Muslim Brotherhood win some seats in the Egyptian parliament?

5. Who can control the rising tide?
Even Netanyahu realizes now that trying to prop up Mubarek is a lost cause. A few short days ago, they sang a different tune....wanting to make the west realize that it was in their best interest to support the Mubarek regime in favour of stability.

The rising tide overwhelmed Tunisia, threatens Jordan, Egypt and now Syria. Sudan protests as well as Lebanon.

This could easily go awry, or it could just as easily mark the beginning of a transformational new era within the Arab world, not only the Arab world actually....the entire global community.

Agreed. And hoping that it's the latter!

7. A genuinely LIBERAL democratic Egypt would be a blessing. Electing another dictator, not so much.

Doesn't matter what Netanyahu says anyway, Israel will be blamed for Egypt.

Either support Mubarak or support installing a tyrant worse than Mubarak (which would obviously be a Likud plot to bring on more war).

9. the comment your addressing struck me as more 'Palinizing'
as in Sarah P said something to effect that 'the Left' would likely find a way to blame Egypt on her!!!!

Palinizing....cause it is all about me.

I just had a funny thought...

somewhere in the annals of the Knesset, talking heads, political spinmeisters are franticaaly trying to find a way to spin this EGYPTIAN revolution in a way that again victimizes Israel, in myopic ignorance of the real reason the protesters are out in the street, day after day.

"How can we make this issue about us?"
"They want Mubarek gone."
"Yeah, I know, but how can we make it about us?"
"They demand free and fair elections."
"Yeah I know, but what about about us?"
"They want independance, real reform. They want their government to work for them. They want to have a voice."
"Yeah I know, but how can we make it about us?"
"radical islamists could be voted in....."
"And that would be bad for us....yippee! POOR US! That is the ticket! I feel better already, what about you?"
"I....don't understand....."
"Elections and democracy are well and fine for US....but it is simply too dangerous for THOSE people to want self determination."
"I thought self determination was a good thing....that is how we got to where we are."
"Yes...It is good for US. It is not necessarily good for US for them to have it too."
"So....Mubarek is good?"
"Mubarek is a SAINT compared to the unknown unknowable unforeseen possibilities."
"But they hate him."
"Who cares? It is all about us after all."
"Oh wait....Obama is speaking....he said....uh-oh.....he said the transition has to occur RIGHT NOW."
"Oh crap.....what a jerk."

11. more on Democratic Egypt:WikiLeaks: Israel's secret hotline to the man tipped to replace Mubarak
As a key figure working for Middle East peace, he once suggested that Israeli troops would be "welcome" to invade Egypt to stop weapons being smuggled to Hamas terrorists in neighbouring Gaza.
