Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday repeated his
earlier statements he has become convinced there
is no reason to wait for a new Palestinian
government and that he is not rejecting
"unilateral steps, not as concessions, but for the
good of the State of Israel."
Sharon, speaking at a special Likud Party meeting,
refused to detail the meaning of "unilateral steps
for our own good," when he believes these steps should
be taken, or whether he intends to evacuate isolated
settlements as part of these steps.
The prime minister promised coalition chairman
MK Gideon Sa'ar (Likud) that the steps will
eventually be brought before the Likud for
consideration even before they are brought to
the government for debate.
Sharon reiterated his pre-election statements
that there would be no escape from the painful
concessions needed in order to advance the
diplomatic process with the Palestinians.
