Israeli troops humiliate Palestinians - and put it on YouTube
http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1094242.html

Forty-three seconds: that's the duration of a video clip uploaded to YouTube less than a year ago under the category of "Comedy."

For the "hero" of the clip, an unidentified young Arab, they were probably eternally long seconds and far from amusing. He was forced to slap himself and sing to the jubilant shouts of the photographer and his buddies - all of them members of Israel's Border Police.

This clip, which has been viewed more than 2,800 times, shows the unknown Palestinian standing in a desert setting while a disembodied voice orders him in Hebrew to hit himself: "Yallah, start, do it hard!"

The viewers hear the chuckles of the other policemen and a clear voice telling the Arab: "Say 'Ana behibak Mishmar Hagvul' <"I love the Border Police? in a mix of Arabic and Hebrew>. Say it!"

They see him obey in a subdued voice and with a frightened look, even as he goes on slapping himself. They hear the "director" laughing and the faceless voice shouting: "Again! Ana behibak Mishmar Hagvul."

After a little more than 30 seconds, the voice says, "Say 'Wahad hummus wahad ful'" - and the Arab man obeys and then is told to complete the rhyme: "Ana behibak Mishmar Hagvul."

After 40 seconds, the abusers appear to have had enough and the voice impatiently orders the victim: "Yallah, rukh, rukh, rukh" ("go"). The camera turns and for a fraction of a second a Border Police Jeep is visible.

1. US Tax dollars at work....
We can't be expected to conduct all the torture we fund with our own personnel... I mean... that would be a drain on US resources...

5. But of course!
If you truly hate the other guy with great passion, giving up your own humanity in order to have a chance to humiliate or hurt the other guy is after all, such a small price to pay!

6. You may hate me too
But you're not part of a gang abusing and humiliating me at gunpoint, are you?

See the difference?

8. what about Hamas?
firing rockets at innocent civilians? This video is a shame and I cannot condone it, but at least they didn't blow the guy up like Hamas or the PLO of days past. Arafat murdered many Americans.

9. I have two questions
1. Haven't the Israelis killed innocent Palestinians? I am all too aware that Americans have been killed by arab terrorism - I've lived through two attacks and my best friend was killed in a third. I also understand degradation and humiliation; I have seen it up close and personally.

2. Who is stealing who's land?

Welcome to DU. I hope this isn't a short vacation from Free Republic.

15. That would depend on the Zionist wouldn't it?
there are some pro-occupation pro-settlement Zionists and there are some that are not I have never seen Leftish Brit or Oberliner for instance called a "freeper" but they're both undeniably Zionists

10. But...but...but...Look Over There! Look Over There!
You can't condone it, but can you condemn it without adding a 'but the other side does much nastier things so let's talk about that instead!' line disclaimer attached to it?

11. I would, but
considering how I usually see one-sided accusations against Israel, many of the time are meant to imply how evil Israel is, I must point out the other side.

12. That's just plain pathetic...
Edited on Sun Jun-21-09 01:21 AM by Violet_Crumble
Using the excuse that yr only doing something because you claim to see someone else doing it is so immature and dumb. If you don't like something, don't start doing it yrself....

btw, this wasn't a 'one-sided accusation against Israel' - it was a video of Border Police assaulting someone. I feel very sorry for the sort of mindset where people feel they must defend things like that because to do so is to 'defend Israel'....

16. Army jails soldier who refused to serve in West Bank
<snip>

"A soldier was sentenced to 30 days in military prison after telling his commanders he would refuse to continue participating in his unit's operations in the territories.

Corporal D., 19, a combat soldier in the Haruv Battalion of the Kfir Brigade, was sentenced not for refusing to serve in the West Bank, but for refusing to perform his duties.

D. announced his refusal after taking part in a March 26 operation in the village of Kifl Hares, in the northern West Bank. The soldier, several of his friends and several Palestinians present said Palestinian prisoners were abused during the operation.

The Military Police is now investigating these events.

Two months ago, due to this event and others D. said he witnessed, D. informed his commanders, starting with his platoon commander, through his company commander and up to the battalion commander, of his decision - both verbally and in writing.

In his letter, D. described how his friends abused and hit Palestinian detainees, destroyed property and harassed Palestinians at roadblocks.

"Their weapons give them the feeling of control and power, and therefore they allow themselves to humiliate those passing through the roadblock in order to ease the boredom and pass the time," he wrote. "The common opinion among Haruv Battalion soldiers is that Arabs are wild animals who should be destroyed, and not people ... They have full opportunity to verbally abuse and beat bound people who cannot protect themselves," wrote D.

He also accused officers of knowing the problem existed but not addressing it."
