"Israel's parliament confirmed Benjamin Netanyahu's government Tuesday, placing the leader of Israel's conservative Likud Party at the helm of the largest coalition government in Israeli history.
Knesset voted 69 to 45 with five labor ministers abstaining to approve Mr. Netanyahu's government after several hours of debate. The coalition, which combines parties with conflicting ideologies, could make decision-making difficult.
Mr. Netanyahu said he had worked to "establish a government that would unite all the central forces in the country."
His government's first priority is Iran and a growing economic crisis, but he also must respond to growing international calls, from Washington and elsewhere, to advance the peace process with the Palestinians. In recent weeks, he has sought to moderate his image, by stressing his commitment to the peace process.
Mr. Netanyahu took pains to portray himself as a pragmatist Tuesday evening, telling a packed parliament that Israel does not want to rule the Palestinians.
"Under the permanent status agreement, the Palestinians will have all the authority to rule themselves,'' he said, according to the Associated Press.
He also has consistently emphasized Iran as the Israel's chief threat, a platform on which he hopes he can find common cause with the Obama administration.
"The greatest danger to mankind and to the State of Israel is that a radical regime will be armed with nuclear weapons," he told Parliament on Tuesday evening, before being sworn in."
